About the role
You will own the design and delivery of AI capabilities that sit at the heart of Sigma's product, turning the data platform into an intelligent, agentic experience. You will collaborate closely with product, design, and engineering teams to uncover high-impact opportunities where AI can drive deeper insights and faster decision-making for enterprise users. Your systems will power recommendations, natural language interfaces, and agentic workflows that feel seamless yet execute complex logic under the hood. You will build and scale the ML infrastructure that supports both internal tooling and customer-facing features, ensuring reliability and performance at every stage. This role gives you direct influence over how thousands of companies analyze their data and make smarter decisions every day. You will tackle novel problems at the intersection of BI, apps, and AI, shaping the core workflow of Sigma. Your work will become an integral part of the product experience for enterprises running critical workloads on the platform.

What you'll do
Identify and prioritize high-impact AI and machine learning opportunities in partnership with product, design, and engineering stakeholders.
Prototype and productionize AI systems that deliver powerful user experiences, including recommendations, natural language interfaces, and agentic workflows.
Develop, deploy, and scale AI and ML infrastructure that supports internal tools and customer-facing features with robustness and performance.
Explore and solve novel user experience challenges at the intersection of business intelligence, applications, and artificial intelligence.
Adapt and fine-tune foundation models, including language and multimodal architectures, for specialized domains and enterprise needs.
Design and implement data curation pipelines that ensure high-quality training and evaluation data across the product lifecycle.
Build and maintain monitoring and observability systems for ML models in production to detect drift, anomalies, and performance degradation.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical specifications and measurable success metrics.
Contribute to the broader technical strategy for AI and machine learning within Sigma's product and engineering organization.
Champion best practices in model development, deployment, and governance to ensure compliance, reliability, and scalability.
Experiment with and evaluate emerging AI techniques to determine applicability and impact within Sigma's analytics and workflow platform.
Take ownership of end-to-end delivery for AI features, from ideation and experimentation through launch and post-launch optimization.
Support and mentor other engineers and stakeholders on AI/ML topics to elevate the overall technical capability of the team.
Engage with the latest research and engineering advances to continuously improve the AI foundation behind Sigma's products.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field is required.
Bring 10+ years of experience building and deploying production-grade AI and machine learning systems.
Demonstrate deep knowledge of machine learning, deep learning, and applied artificial intelligence across a range of techniques and domains.
Show experience across the full machine learning lifecycle, including data curation, training, deployment, and monitoring.
Have a track record of building complex shipped systems, such as recommendations, search, machine translation, or similarly sophisticated AI products.
Show experience adapting or training foundation models for novel domains and integrating them into production applications.
Prove ability to work effectively in a fast-moving, high-growth startup environment with ambiguous problems and evolving priorities.
Demonstrate strong ownership, communication, and collaboration skills while working with distributed and cross-functional teams.
Commitment to writing clean, maintainable code and building tools that empower other teams to use AI capabilities effectively.
Willingness to learn and apply Sigma's technology stack, including cloud data warehouse concepts and SQL-based analytics.
Nice to have
You have built agents that can plan, reason, and use tools in complex workflows.
You are experienced with cloud infrastructure platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
You have worked in a fast-moving startup or high-growth environment where rapid iteration is the norm.
Practical notes
This role is eligible for stock options as part of the total compensation package.
The base salary range for this position is $240,000 - $270,000 annually, and compensation may vary based on qualifications and experience.
The position requires an in-office work environment in New York City.
