About the role
You will join the Cloud Engineering Team to help transform Bitstamp's infrastructure as part of Robinhood. Your primary focus is breaking down the existing monolith into containerized services while connecting systems with Robinhood's global platform. This role blends backend development with platform modernization, pushing the infrastructure toward full containerization and automated operations. You will work in Ljubljana as part of a hybrid team that values deep technical work and clear ownership. The position requires you to drive technical change while collaborating closely with distributed engineering groups. You will be responsible for high-impact projects that directly influence the reliability and scalability of critical financial systems. Success in this role depends on your ability to execute complex work with minimal supervision and communicate effectively across time zones.

What you'll do
- Drive the containerization of the monolith application, adjusting code to modernize deployment and scaling processes for cloud-native operations.
- Execute integration projects that connect Bitstamp's backend systems with Robinhood's global infrastructure, ensuring secure and reliable data flow.
- Identify and build backend improvements that boost platform performance and reduce manual work, including the exploration of AI-assisted approaches to automate repetitive tasks.
- Own complex projects from initial design through deployment, making technical decisions and troubleshooting issues with minimal supervision.
- Work across teams to translate technical requirements into clear implementation plans and improve engineering velocity through better coordination.
- Participate in on-call rotation to maintain 24/7 platform reliability, responding to incidents and supporting production services.
- Collaborate with product and infrastructure teams to define technical standards and best practices for cloud-based services.
- Contribute to the design of automated pipelines, focusing on deployment, monitoring, and operational observability for critical workflows.
- Evaluate existing tools and propose enhancements that streamline development and operations for the engineering organization.
- Mentor junior engineers by providing guidance on cloud technologies, code quality, and problem-solving strategies within the team.
- Analyze system metrics and logs to identify bottlenecks and drive improvements that enhance scalability and user experience.
- Partner with security and compliance stakeholders to ensure that infrastructure changes meet regulatory and organizational standards.
- Support the migration of legacy components by designing adapters and integration layers that reduce risk during cutover.
- Take part in architecture reviews and design discussions to shape the long-term direction of the platform in a cloud-first environment.
Requirements
- 4 to 5 or more years of backend engineering experience building scalable services and APIs.
- Strong background in containerization using Docker and orchestration with Kubernetes in production environments.
- Hands-on experience modernizing legacy architectures, including refactoring monolithic code into modular services.
- Advanced knowledge of AWS services including ECS, EC2, Aurora, and DynamoDB for designing reliable cloud solutions.
- Track record of managing full projects or processes independently, from planning to execution and review.
- Ability to coordinate across different job functions to solve complex problems involving both technical and business stakeholders.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to coach team members and influence stakeholders outside your department through clear and concise messaging.
- Practical project management experience handling technical and administrative logistics, including scheduling, tracking, and documentation.
- Experience working in agile development environments with a focus on delivering incremental value to users and stakeholders.
- Understanding of infrastructure as code principles and familiarity with tools that support automated provisioning and configuration.
- Demonstrated ability to write clean, maintainable code and to perform thorough testing before deploying changes to production.
- Willingness to follow security and operational guidelines to ensure that systems remain resilient and compliant.
- Readiness to learn new technologies and adapt to evolving priorities in a fast-paced, high-growth organization.
- Commitment to maintaining high standards for code quality, documentation, and collaboration with peers.

Practical notes
- Hybrid engagement with a minimum of 3 days per week in the office in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

- On-call rotation participation is required as part of the operational responsibilities for this position.
