About the role
Robinhood is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Wallet team and help shape the future of digital asset management on the platform. In this role, you will design and build the core systems that power cryptocurrency and digital asset custody for millions of users worldwide. You will work closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers across the organization to deliver reliable, secure, and scalable wallet infrastructure that meets the needs of a rapidly growing user base. The Wallet team is responsible for ensuring that users can safely store, send, and receive digital assets through the Robinhood application with confidence and ease while maintaining the highest standards of security and performance.

What you'll do
Architect and implement wallet services that handle cryptocurrency transactions at scale across multiple blockchain networks and protocols.
Design secure key management and storage solutions that protect digital assets for a large and rapidly growing user base.
Build robust APIs and backend services that support wallet creation, balance tracking, and complex transaction processing workflows.
Collaborate closely with security teams to implement best practices for asset protection, threat modeling, and vulnerability mitigation.
Write clean, well-tested code that meets high standards for reliability, maintainability, and performance under heavy production load.
Participate actively in code reviews and contribute meaningfully to the team's engineering culture, technical standards, and shared knowledge.
Debug and resolve complex production issues related to wallet operations, transaction failures, system integrations, and latency optimization.
Define and refine technical roadmaps for wallet feature development in partnership with product and engineering leadership across the company.
Work with compliance and regulatory teams to ensure all wallet features meet legal, regulatory, and audit requirements.
Mentor junior and mid-level engineers and help them grow their technical skills through guidance, code reviews, and knowledge sharing.
Requirements
Experience building distributed systems and backend services in a production environment with measurable impact on reliability and scale.
Proficiency in at least one general-purpose programming language such as Python, Java, or Go is required for this position.
Understanding of cryptocurrency protocols, blockchain fundamentals, and common digital asset standards and token formats is essential.
Familiarity with secure software development practices, cryptographic primitives, and the full key management lifecycle is expected.
Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs and working within microservice architectures at scale in a production setting.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work on complex technical challenges with minimal supervision and clear direction.
Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience in software engineering and development.
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, fast-paced engineering environment with shifting priorities, tight deadlines, and cross-functional partners.
Nice to have
Experience with cold storage solutions and hardware security module integration for digital asset custody and key protection.
Knowledge of regulatory frameworks such as FinCEN, SEC guidelines, and state money transmitter laws and compliance requirements.
Familiarity with distributed ledger technologies, consensus mechanisms, and smart contract platforms used in digital asset ecosystems.
Prior experience working in fintech or financial services companies with regulated products and compliance-driven development processes.
Skills & tools
Python or Java for backend service development, business logic implementation, and data processing pipelines.
Docker and Kubernetes for containerized deployments, orchestration, and management of services in production environments.
AWS or GCP for cloud infrastructure, managed services, auto-scaling, and scalable deployment pipelines.
PostgreSQL or similar relational databases for persistent storage, transactional data management, and query optimization.
Kafka or RabbitMQ for event-driven messaging, data pipelines, and asynchronous processing workflows across distributed systems.
Git for version control, collaborative code management, branching strategies, and code review workflows across teams.

This role is based in Menlo Park, CA or New York, NY with a hybrid work model that combines in-office collaboration and remote work days.
The Wallet team operates on an agile development cycle with regular sprint planning, retrospectives, and cross-team coordination sessions.
