This position invites you to join the dedicated team supporting the production of the Terran R vehicle and the Aeon R engine program. You will play a direct part in scaling our manufacturing operations by refining processes and collaborating with engineering teams to meet our demanding launch schedule. The role requires ownership of complex machining operations from initial planning through full production execution. You will be responsible for driving process improvements that enhance efficiency, quality, and reliability. This position is integral to the success of the Engine Manufacturing team in achieving operational goals. You will work closely with cross-functional partners to ensure manufacturing capabilities align with project objectives. Your contributions will directly impact the ability to deliver flight hardware on schedule.
About the Machining Specialist III Role at Relativity
The Machining Specialist III is a critical technical position within the Engine Manufacturing team at Relativity. This role is focused on enabling the production scale-up for the Terran R vehicle and the Aeon R engine program. Success in this position requires a hands-on expert who can develop and optimize the manufacturing processes necessary to meet aggressive launch schedules. The specialist will act as a technical leader in the machine shop, responsible for translating design intent into reliable, high-volume production reality while ensuring adherence to aerospace quality standards.
What you'll do
- Develop detailed process plans, standard operating procedures, inspection plans, and work holding designs for complex engine components.
- Implement new manufacturing technologies and methodologies to optimize production flow and reduce cycle times.
- Provide critical input on Design for Manufacturability during design reviews with engineering partners.
- Explain intricate manufacturing processes, fixturing strategies, and inspection methods, including GD&T requirements and datum structures, to influence design decisions.
- Propose specific design updates to improve the manufacturability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of hardware.
- Investigate root causes for non-conforming hardware and implement effective corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives to enhance productivity and quality within the machining operations.
- Collaborate with quality assurance teams to ensure all processes and outputs meet stringent aerospace standards.
- Mentor junior machinists and technicians on best practices and technical procedures.
- Support the ramp-up of production activities to meet launch vehicle development milestones.
- Analyze production data to identify trends and drive adjustments for optimal performance.
- Partner with supply chain and logistics to ensure timely availability of materials and tooling.
Requirements
- 8 years of progressive and related CNC Machining experience in a demanding technical environment.
- Proficiency in CAD and CAM software to develop and modify machining programs.
- Knowledge of machining techniques and GD&T principles essential for interpreting engineering specifications.
- Understanding of manufacturing processes, lean principles, and continuous improvement methodologies to drive operational excellence.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a regulated aerospace manufacturing environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills to address complex technical challenges independently.
- Excellent communication skills to interface with multidisciplinary engineering and production teams.
- Commitment to maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and documentation.
Required Qualifications and Professional Standards
Candidates must possess a minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible CNC Machining experience. This background must be directly related to roles in technical manufacturing environments, demonstrating a proven track record of process execution and problem resolution. Mastery of CAD and CAM software is non-negotiable, as the role requires constant interaction with digital design files and toolpath creation. A deep understanding of machining fundamentals, Geometric Dimensioning and Tapping (GD&T), and datum structures is mandatory for ensuring part conformity and process accuracy. The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of manufacturing process flows, lean manufacturing philosophies, and established continuous improvement frameworks such as Kaizen or similar methodologies. Experience within the aerospace industry is highly valued due to the regulated nature of the work, requiring strict adherence to quality control and safety protocols. The ability to analyze complex problems, implement independent solutions, and communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences is essential for success in this cross-functional role.
