About the role
You will join the engine manufacturing team at Relativity to support the Terran R program by developing and optimizing machining processes for 3D-printed hardware components. In this position, you will manage the complete lifecycle of parts, overseeing the creation of first article programs and refining these processes to achieve production-level efficiency. The role demands a hands-on approach to solving complex manufacturing challenges, specifically in the areas of tooling, fixture development, and direct collaboration with manufacturing engineers. You will be responsible for ensuring that designs are translated into robust and reliable machining strategies. What you'll do
- Develop, post, and optimize G-code programs for complex engine components using advanced machining strategies.
- Design and implement custom tooling and work-holding fixtures to ensure stability and accuracy during demanding operations.
- Author comprehensive manufacturing plans and setup documentation that clearly define processes and standards.
- Partner with engineering staff to iterate on hardware designs and machining methods for enhanced manufacturability.
- Manage high-precision, multi-axis machining operations, including lights-out production runs for increased throughput.
- Analyze production feedback to refine programs, reduce cycle times, and improve overall part quality.
- Utilize simulation techniques to verify programs and prevent potential collisions or errors before reaching the machine.
- Maintain strict adherence to quality control protocols throughout the programming and manufacturing lifecycle.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency and reliability in the manufacturing workflow.
- Troubleshoot machining issues by adjusting programs, tooling, or fixturing to resolve production obstacles.
- Collaborate with quality assurance teams to ensure all parts meet specified tolerances and surface finishes.
- Contribute to the successful scaling of prototypes into high-volume production schedules.
- Assist in the training and mentoring of less experienced team members on best practices and safety standards.
- Stay current with emerging technologies and techniques in CNC machining and additive manufacturing integration.
Requirements
- 7+ years of professional CNC programming experience in a demanding manufacturing environment.
- Proficiency in programming and operating 2-axis, 3-axis, 5-axis, and mill/turn equipment to a high standard.
- Demonstrated experience with DMG-MORI machinery, specifically NLX, NTX, DMC FD, and DMU series controls and capabilities.
- Deep knowledge of GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis for interpreting complex engineering drawings.
- Ability to manually edit G-code for program optimization and to resolve intricate machining issues.
- Proven track record of transitioning hardware from initial prototype stages through to full production qualification.
- Strong understanding of material properties and their effects on machining processes and tool life.
- Commitment to maintaining a safe and clean work environment by following all safety procedures and regulations.
Nice to have
- Engineering degree or related technical field combined with 6+ years of relevant hands-on programming experience.
- Background in machining 3D-printed metal parts and understanding the unique challenges they present.
Practical notes
- This position is based on a 50-hour workweek, which includes 10 guaranteed overtime hours.
- Compensation includes a 10% shift differential on top of the base salary.
- Employment is contingent upon successful completion of any required background checks and drug screening.
- The work environment involves exposure to shop noise, moving machinery, and industrial settings.
- All personnel are required to adhere to strict safety protocols and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
- This role operates on the second shift schedule, which runs Monday through Friday.
