About the role

You will establish and enforce the architectural standards that define our cloud-native and on-premises deployment paradigms. This position requires deep analytical thinking to deconstruct legacy infrastructure bottlenecks and engineer robust automation frameworks. The Senior DevOps Engineer will act as the primary technical advisor for infrastructure investment decisions across multiple mission streams. You will own the design of resilient, scalable systems that balance security compliance with rapid delivery objectives. In this capacity, you will mentor junior engineers on best practices for infrastructure as code and immutable deployments. You will collaborate closely with program management to translate operational constraints into technical roadmaps. Your expertise will be the foundation for optimizing our observability stack and reducing mean time to recovery. Ultimately, you will ensure that our software supply chain remains secure, auditable, and performant under demanding conditions.

What you'll do

Architect and implement multi-account AWS and Azure landing zones that align with federal risk management frameworks.

Lead the development of CI/CD pipelines using container orchestration platforms to automate the build, test, and release lifecycle.

Conduct in-depth performance analysis of distributed systems to identify latency and failure points, proposing remediation strategies.

Design and maintain infrastructure as code templates to standardize environments and eliminate configuration drift.

Evaluate emerging open-source and commercial tools to enhance our DevOps toolchain and integrate them securely.

Partner with cybersecurity teams to ensure all deployment artifacts meet stringent compliance and data protection requirements.

Automate the provisioning of complex hybrid cloud environments to reduce manual intervention and human error.

Develop monitoring dashboards and alerting rules that provide actionable insights into system health and application metrics.

Create disaster recovery and high-availability strategies that guarantee service continuity for critical government applications.

Document operational procedures and runbooks to ensure knowledge transfer and continuity across the team.

Mentor and coach other engineers on cloud best practices, fostering a culture of operational excellence.

Collaborate with product owners to refine backlog items, ensuring technical feasibility and alignment with sprint goals.

Drive the adoption of security best practices throughout the development lifecycle, from code to production.

Analyze incident post-mortems to identify root causes and implement preventative controls to avoid recurrence.

Requirements

U.S. citizenship is mandatory for this position due to the sensitive nature of the work.

Applicants must possess a current Secret security clearance or be able to obtain one upon hire.

You must have a minimum of 8 years of hands-on experience with DevOps engineering practices and technologies.

Demonstrated expertise in scripting and automation using languages such as Python, Go, or Bash is required.

Experience with major public cloud providers including Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure is essential.

You must have a proven track record of managing containerized applications using Kubernetes or similar orchestration tools.

Solid understanding of networking protocols, load balancing, and firewall management concepts is necessary.

Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation is non-negotiable.

Nice to have

Proficiency in GitLab CI or Jenkins for building robust pipelines is preferred.

Knowledge of service mesh technologies like Istio or Linkerd is advantageous.

Experience with mainframe integration or legacy system modernization is a plus.

Familiarity with DevSecOps frameworks and compliance standards such as NIST or FedRAMP is desirable.

Practical notes

This is a full-time position based in Chantilly, Virginia.

Candidates must be eligible for U.S. government clearance, requiring a U.S. passport.

The selected candidate may be required to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement.

This role is contingent upon funding availability and requires a thorough background investigation.

The successful candidate must be able to pass a drug screening and reference checks.

Travel to client sites within the National Capital Region may be required periodically.
