What you'll do
- Partner with sales teams to obtain necessary tax documentation for complex deals.
- Oversee tax calculations within Avalara to ensure accuracy for monthly filings and audits.
- Support global VAT reporting requirements.
- Administer the unclaimed property process.
- Handle routine business and tax filings for various local and state jurisdictions.
- Execute month and quarter-end account reconciliations.
- Participate in special projects and respond to audit inquiries.
- Optimize workflows by identifying process improvements and integrating AI tools.
- Validate tax rates and rules within the system to prevent discrepancies.
- Coordinate with external tax advisors to resolve complex compliance matters.
- Maintain organized documentation for all tax-related activities and communications.

Requirements
- Bachelor degree in Accounting or a related field.
- 1 to 4 years of experience in accounting or tax.
- Strong organizational and time management capabilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to navigate and succeed in ambiguous or changing environments.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple deadlines without compromising quality.
- Familiarity with tax compliance processes for domestic and international jurisdictions.

This role is situated within the Finance team and reports to the appropriate leadership within the department. The Senior Tax Accountant will work closely with other finance professionals to ensure that all tax activities are executed in a timely and accurate manner. The day-to-day responsibilities include working with Avalara to process tax calculations and ensure that all returns are filed correctly. You will be responsible for monitoring tax rates and making updates as necessary to reflect current regulations. This includes validating tax codes and ensuring that the correct rates are applied to transactions. You will also support the sales team by providing guidance on tax treatment for specific deals. This requires a strong understanding of nexus and how it applies to various jurisdictions.
Another key responsibility is the administration of the unclaimed property process. This involves tracking deadlines, filing returns, and communicating with state authorities. You will also handle routine business filings for a variety of local and state jurisdictions. This requires a high level of organization and attention to detail. You must be able to manage multiple filing calendars and ensure that no deadlines are missed.
Month-end and quarter-end reconciliations are a critical part of the role. You will be responsible for ensuring that all tax-related entries are accurate and support the financial statements. This includes reviewing transactions and resolving any discrepancies that arise. You will also participate in special projects as needed. This may include process improvement initiatives or responding to audit inquiries from internal or external parties.
The role also involves optimizing workflows and identifying opportunities to integrate AI tools. You will be expected to evaluate current processes and suggest improvements that increase efficiency.
