This position represents a distinct opportunity to contribute directly to a growing network of professionals dedicated to enhancing the perinatal experience for families across South Carolina. In this role, you will operate as an independent practitioner, taking full ownership of your clinical decisions, client interactions, and professional practice standards. You will guide expecting and new families through the profound transitions of pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum recovery by providing evidence-based education and consistent emotional support. This is a 1099 independent contractor position, meaning you are responsible for your own taxes, benefits, and business expenses, and you are not classified as an employee of Pomelo Care. The company will provide specific administrative and operational support, handling the logistical aspects of client intake, billing, and documentation so you can focus on the human side of care. By partnering with this network, you will help improve birth outcomes and ensure families feel empowered, informed, and supported during one of the most critical periods of their lives. Ultimately, your work will center on respecting the autonomy of each family while navigating the medical system with informed consent and advocacy.

What you'll do

• Facilitate comprehensive prenatal education sessions that address the physiological, emotional, and logistical aspects of pregnancy and birth.
• Provide continuous physical and emotional support during labor and delivery, utilizing non-medical comfort measures and advocacy techniques.
• Offer expert guidance on infant feeding and breastfeeding challenges, helping families navigate the early days of newborn care with confidence.
• Conduct thorough postpartum visits to monitor physical recovery, mental wellness, and family adjustment, ensuring continuity of care.
• Maintain meticulous and accurate records for every client interaction, adhering strictly to privacy, quality, and compliance standards.
• Utilize telehealth platforms and video conferencing tools effectively to deliver remote support and consultation when in-person care is not feasible.
• Coordinate scheduling and logistics to accommodate evening and weekend availability, ensuring flexibility to meet the urgent needs of families.
• Verify and validate all professional credentials, including NPI numbers and insurance documentation, to ensure smooth administrative processing.
• Engage in ongoing professional development by participating in peer learning communities and staying current with best practices in birth work.
• Build trust-based relationships with diverse families, demonstrating cultural humility and sensitivity to individual backgrounds and beliefs.
• Perform background screenings and credential verifications as required to maintain the highest standards of safety and professionalism.
• Act as a reliable point of contact for families, offering clear communication and timely responses to their questions and concerns.

Requirements

You have completed certification and training as a birth and/or full-spectrum doula through a recognized program. You bring direct experience working with families, demonstrating a deep understanding of the stages of labor, pain management options, and the immediate postpartum period. You possess strong verbal and written communication skills, allowing you to connect effectively with individuals and partners from a wide array of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. You are proficient in using digital tools, including telehealth software, video conferencing applications, and electronic health record systems for documentation. Your personal schedule must be highly adaptable to accommodate both virtual consultations and in-person support, including nights, weekends, and holidays. You must hold a current Adult and Infant CPR/First Aid certification to ensure safety during high-stress scenarios. You are able to serve the specific geographic regions of South Carolina listed in the service area without requiring extensive travel beyond these boundaries. You understand the importance of maintaining strict confidentiality and adhering to HIPAA regulations in all client interactions. You are committed to a process of continuous learning, seeking out additional training and resources to enhance your knowledge base and support capabilities.
