Senior Software Engineer
Job description
About the role
You will own the design and delivery of a new product launch that sits at the heart of Perk's next generation platform. You will refine ambiguous business problems into clear technical roadmaps and de-risk them through targeted spikes and prototypes. You will write the foundational design documents that shape how systems scale, perform, and recover from failure. You will lead cross-squad alignment so that engineering efforts stay tightly coupled with company goals. You will mentor engineers and elevate the technical bar through code reviews, design discussions, and hands-on pairing. You will act as a guardian of quality, proactively managing technical debt to keep the platform robust and maintainable. You will ensure that the work your squad delivers has real customer impact, not just high effort.
Key facts
What you'll do
Define and own a significant piece of Perk's platform as part of a new product launch, shaping both the long-term vision and the near-term execution plan.
Architect scalable and evolvable systems by writing design documents that address performance, failure isolation, data models, and long-term maintenance needs.
Translate complex business goals into technical roadmaps, de-risking ambiguous projects through targeted spikes, prototypes, and iterative validation.
Establish frontend architecture patterns including state management, performance budgets, and robust testing strategies such as E2E tests with Cypress.
Engineer sophisticated backend solutions that involve API versioning, intelligent caching strategies, and carefully planned data migrations.
Define and uphold technical standards across the stack, driving improvements in CI/CD, testing practices, and coding conventions.
Lead observability and SRE practices to ensure systems are reliable, debuggable, and aligned with strict uptime and performance service levels.
Operate effectively beyond your squad by coordinating cross-squad initiatives, contributing to engineering guilds, and aligning stakeholders on shared technical challenges.
Mentor and raise the bar for engineers by providing thoughtful feedback during reviews, guiding less experienced colleagues, and championing best practices in design and delivery.
Use design doc reviews, guild meetings, and pairing sessions to lift the overall engineering standard and ensure the team's success is the team's success.
Balance impact over effort by focusing on outcomes for customers, ensuring that work delivers visible results rather than simply consuming time.
Guard the platform against shadow work and manual processes, automating repetitive tasks to recover lost productivity and restore engineering morale.
Communicate complex ideas clearly across multiple teams, identifying the right people to involve and driving alignment across the broader organization.
Continuously evaluate tools, frameworks, and processes to modernize the stack and reduce long-term maintenance burden where possible.
Requirements
You have a strong background in software engineering with at least several years of hands-on experience building production systems.
You are comfortable making architectural decisions that affect scalability, reliability, and long-term maintenance of critical platforms.
You have demonstrated ability in both frontend and backend development, understanding how they integrate to deliver seamless user experiences.
You write clean, testable code and have experience with testing frameworks and strategies such as unit, integration, and end-to-end tests.
You have used CI/CD pipelines to automate testing and deployments, and you understand the levers that improve release safety and throughput.
You are fluent in discussing system design, data models, and API contracts, and you can communicate these ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.
You have experience operating systems in production, including monitoring, alerting, and incident response practices.
You are comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where priorities can shift and ambiguity is common, while still delivering high-quality outcomes.
You collaborate well within cross-functional teams and actively seek alignment with product, design, and operations partners.
You are based in or eligible to work in Boston, and you can commit to the full-time engagement as defined by Perk's policies.
Nice to have
Experience contributing to open source projects or publishing reusable libraries and tools.
Background working with travel, spend, or expense management systems.
Familiarity with Perk's product suite and domain, demonstrated through personal use or prior professional experience.
Practical notes
This role is based in Boston and requires full-time commitment.
Candidates must be eligible to work in the location specified without sponsorship requirements at the time of application.
