Key facts
What you'll do
- Operate a diverse range of machinery, from manual lathes and mills to advanced CNC platforms, to produce components that meet exacting tolerances.
- Interpret and translate dense engineering documentation into physical assemblies, ensuring every detail aligns with the specified requirements.
- Develop and refine CAD/CAM toolpaths and workflows to optimize material usage and machining efficiency for complex geometries.
- Construct intricate jigs and fixtures that enable the precise alignment and secure mounting of parts during the fabrication process.
- Perform meticulous finishing operations, including deburring, polishing, and surface treatment to achieve the desired functional and visual quality.
- Partner with research scientists to fabricate experimental apparatus that pushes the boundaries of material behavior and structural performance.
- Conduct rigorous in-process inspections, utilizing precision measuring instruments to verify dimensions and maintain quality control.
- Collaborate with designers to iterate on physical models, providing constructive feedback on manufacturability and structural integrity.
- Maintain a highly organized workspace, ensuring that all tools and equipment are properly stored, calibrated, and ready for immediate use.
- Champion a culture of safety by strictly adhering to all OSHA protocols and proactively identifying potential hazards in the workshop environment.
Requirements
- Possess a minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in a professional workshop setting, demonstrating proficiency with both traditional hand tools and modern digital fabrication equipment.
- Exhibit advanced capabilities in CNC programming and operation, as well as expert-level manual machining techniques for metals and plastics.
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of mechanical assembly processes, including the installation of bearings, seals, fasteners, and precision alignments.
- Hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a closely related technical discipline that provides a strong foundation in materials and manufacturing.
- Show the ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, schematics, and engineering drawings without ambiguity.
- Prove a track record of solving unforeseen technical problems and adapting workflows in dynamic, less structured project environments.
- Display a natural mechanical intuition and a genuine preference for engaging directly with physical materials and hands-on tasks.
- Meet the physical demands of the role, which include high manual dexterity, the ability to stand for prolonged periods, lift heavy objects, and work comfortably in confined or awkward spaces.
- Maintain strict attention to detail to ensure that every prototype adheres to the strictest manufacturing standards and tolerances.
- Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams to ensure that project goals are met on schedule and to a high standard of quality.
