About the role
This role represents a critical position within the DoorDash Labs team where you will own the end-to-end process of taking digital designs and converting them into robust physical prototypes. You will act as the primary technical expert responsible for the fabrication of components that directly support the development of autonomous delivery robots. Your daily work will involve making high-stakes decisions that impact the accuracy and functionality of hardware used in real-world testing. You will own the execution of complex machining programs from setup through final inspection, ensuring that every part meets strict engineering tolerances. Furthermore, you will serve as a hands-on fabricator and assembler, bridging the gap between design intent and physical reality by building complete robotic platforms. This position requires a deep commitment to safety, quality, and the proactive identification of manufacturing risks during the prototype phase. You will be a key contributor to the speed and reliability of the hardware development cycle.

What you'll do
- Execute complex machining operations on 5-axis CNC machines and CNC lathes to create precision prototype components with tight tolerances.
- Program, set up, and operate manual milling and turning equipment to produce low-volume, high-complexity parts that meet rigorous specifications.
- Configure and manage a diverse fleet of 3D printing technologies, including FDM, SLS, and SLA, to produce functional prototypes and jigs.
- Analyze detailed engineering drawings, blueprints, and CAD models to verify dimensions and ensure builds align exactly with design requirements.
- Design and manufacture custom jigs, fixtures, and specialized tooling that streamline the assembly process and improve accuracy during fabrication.
- Provide critical Design for Manufacturability feedback to mechanical engineers to optimize part geometry and production efficiency.
- Implement and execute preventative maintenance schedules for all shop machinery to minimize downtime and ensure operational reliability.
- Manage the inventory of machinist consumables, such as cutting tools, inserts, coolants, resins, and filaments, to maintain workflow continuity.
- Perform the physical assembly, wiring, and mechanical troubleshooting of robotic delivery vehicles and associated test fixtures.
- Uphold strict OSHA standards by maintaining a clean, organized, and safe machine shop environment at all times.
- Lead efforts in EH&S compliance, including the proper handling of hazardous materials and the management of Safety Data Sheets.
- Utilize computers for meticulous documentation, record-keeping, and the tracking of calibration schedules for measurement equipment.
- Communicate effectively with cross-functional engineering teams to prioritize and respond to high-urgency prototype requests.
- Inspect finished components using precision measurement tools to guarantee they meet quality standards before assembly.
- Troubleshoot issues related to 3D printing and CNC machining to resolve problems and optimize the prototyping process.
Requirements
- Bring a minimum of 7+ years of hands-on experience working in a high-precision machine shop, R&D lab, or prototype-focused environment.
- Demonstrate mastery in the operation of 5-axis CNC programming, CNC lathes, and a wide range of manual machining equipment.
- Show proficiency with precision measurement instruments, including micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and coordinate measuring machines.
- Possess hands-on experience with professional-grade 3D printing platforms such as Formlabs, Markforged, and Carbon equipment.
- Exhibit strong manual dexterity and excellent hand-eye coordination necessary for intricate assembly and precise tool handling.
- Maintain the physical capability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds regularly.
- Thrive in physically demanding workspaces, including standing for extended durations and working safely around heavy machinery.
- Ensure high visual acuity to accurately read detailed blueprints, take precise measurements, and perform meticulous craftsmanship.
- Demonstrate expertise in CAD/CAM software, including Mastercam, HSMWorks, Fusion 360, SolidWorks, or Onshape, for creating toolpaths and navigating complex models.
- Agree to wear and consistently use the required Personal Protective Equipment, including eye and ear protection, in compliance with safety protocols.
