The Tech Lead / Architect will own the end-to-end technical strategy and delivery of our core diagnostic platforms, ensuring that our architecture aligns with our mission of providing flexible and reliable testing solutions. This role is responsible for guiding the technical vision and translating complex business requirements into robust, scalable, and secure technical designs. The hire will lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of critical software systems that power our diagnostic products and services. They will partner closely with cross-functional teams including product, science, and operations to drive technical excellence and innovation. The Tech Lead / Architect will mentor engineering teams, foster best practices, and ensure that our technical infrastructure is resilient and future-proof. This position requires a hands-on leader who is deeply involved in both strategic technical decisions and the details of implementation to ensure the highest standards of quality and reliability in our products.

What you'll do
Architect and design scalable, secure, and high-performance software systems for our diagnostic testing platforms in collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders.
Lead the technical discovery and evaluation of new technologies, frameworks, and tools to ensure our solutions remain cutting-edge and aligned with industry best practices.
Partner with product managers and scientific leaders to define technical requirements and translate complex business needs into clear technical specifications and implementation plans.
Drive the development of our core software products by defining architecture patterns, coding standards, and engineering practices that ensure consistency and quality across the codebase.
Collaborate with data science and laboratory operations teams to integrate advanced analytical algorithms and laboratory workflows into our software platforms seamlessly.
Mentor and guide engineering team members by providing technical leadership, code reviews, and constructive feedback to foster continuous improvement and skill development.
Ensure the reliability, performance, and security of our systems by leading rigorous testing, code reviews, and infrastructure assessments throughout the development lifecycle.
Act as a technical liaison between our engineering organization and external partners, including vendors and customers, to ensure alignment and successful integration of solutions.
Lead the planning and execution of technical roadmaps, ensuring that our software strategy supports the company's business objectives and growth plans effectively.
Champion agile development methodologies and continuous improvement initiatives to optimize delivery speed, quality, and team collaboration.
Implement monitoring and observability strategies to gain deep insights into system performance, enabling proactive identification and resolution of issues.
Promote a culture of innovation by encouraging experimentation, knowledge sharing, and the responsible adoption of new technologies where they provide clear value.
Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and regulatory requirements related to software development and data security in diagnostic applications.
Foster collaboration across distributed teams by leveraging modern communication tools and practices to maintain alignment and productivity.
Requirements
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing large-scale software systems with a strong understanding of architectural patterns and best practices.
Proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as Python, JavaScript, or similar, with a proven track record of writing clean, maintainable, and efficient code.
Solid understanding of cloud platforms, particularly AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, including core services like compute, storage, networking, and serverless architectures.
Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker and orchestration platforms like Kubernetes for deploying and managing scalable applications.
Strong knowledge of database technologies, including relational databases like PostgreSQL or MySQL and NoSQL databases for diverse data storage needs.
Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools, including CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and monitoring systems to ensure reliable software delivery.
Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze complex technical challenges and propose effective solutions in a fast-paced environment.
Strong communication and collaboration skills to effectively work with cross-functional teams and translate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
Nice to have
Previous experience in the diagnostic, healthcare, or biotechnology sectors is highly valued and provides context for our specialized domain.
Hands-on experience with machine learning frameworks and data processing pipelines is preferred for roles involving advanced analytics integration.
Knowledge of regulatory frameworks such as CLIA, CAP, or FDA guidelines related to diagnostic software development is a significant advantage.
Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) or electronic laboratory systems (ELIS) is beneficial for understanding workflow integration needs.
Familiarity with security frameworks and standards relevant to healthcare data, such as HIPAA, is preferred to ensure robust protection of sensitive information.
Experience contributing to open source projects or engaging with technical communities demonstrates a commitment to continuous learning and collaboration.
Practical notes
This is a full-time position based in Milwaukee, WI.
Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future.
Travel requirements are not expected as part of this role.
