About the company
n8n is a workflow automation platform developed by n8n GmbH, a company based in Berlin. The name is pronounced "n-eight-n" and comes from a contraction of the word nodemation. The company was founded by Jan Oberhauser and released the platform publicly in 2019. The software lets users build automations by connecting applications, services, and AI models in a visual, node-based editor. Users can extend workflows with custom JavaScript or Python code. The platform runs as a self-hosted application or as a managed cloud service. This flexibility gives teams control over data privacy and infrastructure. n8n is often described as a source-available alternative to hosted integration platforms such as Zapier and Make. The source-available model allows users to inspect the code and run it on their own servers. The company focuses on providing a tool that works for technical users who need custom logic and for teams that require flexible deployment options. The product serves developers, operations teams, and businesses automating internal processes. The company continues to develop the platform with an emphasis on extensibility and user control over automation infrastructure.
