About the role
You will architect and validate the perception and planning stacks within MujinOS that translate raw sensor data into reliable, real-time robotic actions in dynamic industrial environments. You will partner directly with our Machine Intelligence team to refine algorithms that power digital twins, ensuring virtual models accurately predict and optimize physical robot behavior. You will own the integration of our flagship MujinController no-code interface with advanced motion planning and computer vision modules for complex logistics workflows. You will conduct rigorous experimentation to measure and improve the robustness of autonomous operations such as palletizing, picking, and truck unloading under variable conditions. You will document findings and translate technical insights into clear narratives that help both engineering and non-technical stakeholders understand system performance. You will collaborate across time zones with our growing teams in Japan, the US, China, and Europe to align on automation roadmaps and best practices. You will actively contribute to an open innovation culture where iterative testing and data-driven decisions shape the future of supply chain efficiency. You will represent Mujin at the forefront of industrial automation by delivering concrete results that demonstrate the power of machine intelligence in real-world deployments.

What you'll do
Investigate and characterize the performance of advanced perception algorithms using diverse real-world and synthetic datasets to support digital twin accuracy.
Quantify the efficiency and stability of motion planning outputs across different robot platforms and operational scenarios, then propose data-backed improvements.
Execute end-to-end validation of no-code configurations in MujinController for demanding applications like palletizing, picking, and truck unloading.
Design and run comparative experiments that isolate the impact of vision, planning, and control variables on overall system reliability.
Analyze telemetry and logs to identify root causes of autonomy failures and work with engineers to refine algorithmic behavior.
Develop and maintain testing frameworks that continuously monitor key performance indicators for autonomous operations in simulated and live environments.
Synthesize complex experimental results into concise reports and visualizations that inform product decisions and customer communications.
Support the creation of internal tools that streamline data collection, annotation, and analysis for ongoing machine learning initiatives.
Collaborate with cross-functional partners to translate business requirements into technical tasks that align with MujinOS capabilities.
Champion best practices for documentation, version control, and reproducibility to ensure knowledge sharing and long-term maintainability.
Contribute to a culture of rigorous experimentation by proposing hypotheses, defining metrics, and iterating based on empirical evidence.
Represent Mujin in external-facing contexts by preparing clear summaries of internship outcomes for team reviews and stakeholder updates.
Requirements
You are enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Computer Science, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related technical field.
You possess a strong foundational knowledge of computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and software development practices.
You have hands-on experience with at least one modern programming language, such as Python or C++, and are comfortable writing clean, maintainable code.
You understand core concepts in robotics, such as kinematics, dynamics, perception, and control, and can relate them to real-world system behavior.
You are familiar with computer vision basics, including image formation, feature detection, and common deep learning-based recognition methods.
You have used or contributed to robotics simulation tools and can evaluate how simulated behavior translates to physical systems.
You demonstrate strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret logs, metrics, and experimental results to drive decision-making.
You communicate effectively in English, both in writing and verbal discussion, and can collaborate with global team members.
You are proactive in learning new technologies, frameworks, and methodologies, and you apply them to solve complex automation challenges.
You thrive in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment where you must adapt quickly to shifting priorities and emerging technical constraints.

Nice to have
Prior experience with robotic manipulation tasks, such as grasping, palletizing, or bin picking, using real or simulated platforms.
Familiarity with containerized development environments, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure commonly used in robotics engineering teams.
Basic understanding of optimization techniques, such as linear programming or heuristic search, and their application to motion planning.
Experience with data visualization tools and frameworks that help communicate results to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Knowledge of modern deep learning frameworks and their deployment in real-time perception and control scenarios.
Exposure to ROS or similar middleware used in robotics research and production environments.

This internship is based exclusively at our headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, and requires in-person attendance.
