Backend Engineer, Data Centers
Job description
About the role
The will own the server side logic that powers Meter's next generation data center networking products. You will be responsible for designing and maintaining the services that ingest, process, and expose massive streams of telemetry and configuration data for high performance networks. This role requires deep collaboration with firmware and frontend teams to ensure that the backend infrastructure remains consistent and compatible as the hardware evolves. You will own the reliability and scalability of critical data paths, ensuring that the platform can handle the demanding requirements of modern data centers. The position is central to Meter's long term ambition of turning internet infrastructure into a utility by providing robust backend primitives for a new generation of switching products. You will be accountable for delivering backend solutions that meet strict performance, monitoring, and feature versioning requirements under close scrutiny as a new vendor in the data center market. Ultimately, your work will directly impact how easily enterprises and campus networks can move, secure, and analyze traffic at scale.
Key facts
What you'll do
Design and implement backend services in Go and Python that enable backwards compatible API evolution across rapidly changing data center schemas.
Build and maintain scalable data ingestion pipelines that process petabytes of information through Kafka, Postgres, and Clickhouse for real-time analytics.
Create robust CI/CD workflows that ensure the API contract stays synchronized with underlying data model changes without breaking existing integrations.
Enable fine grained querying of historical and real-time network data to support debugging, performance analysis, and business intelligence at any point in time.
Collaborate with data modelers to co design training and evaluation pipelines that are reproducible, debuggable, and optimized for speed.
Own the performance and latency characteristics of critical endpoints to satisfy real time serving constraints in high stakes data center environments.
Define and enforce the principle of smart data, dumb functions by pushing as much processing as possible into the data layer.
Work closely with firmware and frontend teams to align interface contracts and ensure that the backend infrastructure scales to meet new product requirements.
Help Meter enter the data center market as a scrutinized new vendor by building infrastructure that meets enterprise grade reliability and monitoring standards.
Support the evolution of Meter's networking platform as it vertically integrates hardware, firmware, operating systems, and operations into a unified product.
Requirements
Bring three to five years of experience building systems that directly interact with networking hardware and software in production environments.
Demonstrate strong experience with Kafka, Postgres, and Clickhouse for large scale data movement and storage operations.
Write clean and maintainable Go and Python code while guaranteeing compatibility across constantly evolving data contracts and APIs.
Show a solid understanding of networking primitives and data center traffic patterns including east west and north south flows.
Prove that you can own backend components that are critical to infrastructure that will be heavily scrutinized as a new vendor.
Have the ability to work within standard office hours in San Francisco while collaborating with globally distributed teams.
Be prepared to read and adhere to Meter's Job Applicant Privacy Notice as part of the application process.
Commit to building systems that are reliable, performant, and observable in production at scale.
Contribute code with an awareness of how backend services impact firmware and frontend experiences.
Nice to have
Experience contributing to open source infrastructure projects that involve networking, data pipelines, or distributed systems.
Familiarity with the tools and languages mentioned in the requirements, specifically Go, Python, Kafka, Postgres, and Clickhouse.
