Kickstarter PBC is seeking a Director, Brand and Communications to take ownership of the company's brand strategy and external communications. This senior leader will define how Kickstarter presents itself to creators, backers, and the wider public. The role involves shaping the narrative around the platform's mission and values across every audience and channel. As a public benefit corporation, Kickstarter brings a distinct purpose-driven perspective to how it communicates with the world. The Director will work at the intersection of brand storytelling and business strategy, ensuring that every message reinforces the company's identity and long-term vision. The Director will collaborate across departments to unify the brand experience for all external audiences.

What you'll do
- Lead the creation and implementation of Kickstarter's comprehensive brand strategy across all internal and external communication channels.
- Oversee the development of high-quality content that clearly communicates the company's mission, values, and platform updates to stakeholders.
- Manage and grow the brand and communications team, offering strategic direction, coaching, and performance feedback to each member.
- Partner closely with senior leadership to ensure all brand messaging aligns with business priorities and product roadmaps.
- Serve as the primary communications lead during major company announcements, product launches, and other significant organizational developments and initiatives.
- Create and maintain detailed brand guidelines that govern tone, visual standards, and messaging consistency across every touchpoint.
- Track and analyze brand perception through ongoing media monitoring and social listening, preparing regular reports and actionable insights for executive leadership.
- Work in tandem with product, design, and engineering teams to develop clear and compelling messaging around new platform features.
- Cultivate and sustain relationships with external agencies, journalists, and creative partners to extend Kickstarter's brand reach and impact.
- Design and maintain crisis communications protocols that protect the company's reputation and ensure rapid, coordinated responses when needed.
Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, or a closely related academic field.
- A minimum of ten years of professional experience in brand management, corporate communications, or a similar discipline.
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing a communications or brand team with at least five direct or indirect reports.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities with a strong command of storytelling tailored to varied audiences.
- Prior experience working at or with a creative technology company, crowdfunding platform, or a comparable consumer-facing organization.
- A proven history of guiding brand strategy through periods of significant organizational growth, transformation, or heightened public attention.
- Thorough knowledge of media relations, press strategy, and the dynamics of the creator economy and crowdfunding ecosystem.
- Strong ability to work independently and stay organized in a remote-first work environment with minimal direct supervision and clear self-management habits.
Nice to have
- A master's degree in communications, marketing, public affairs, or an MBA with a focus on branding or strategic communications.
- Experience working within a public benefit corporation structure and communicating the values and commitments of a B-corp to outside audiences.
- Deep familiarity with the crowdfunding industry, including the dynamics of creator ecosystems, backer communities, and platform governance.
- A background in managing external agency partnerships for creative campaigns, social media strategy, or experiential brand initiatives.
Skills & tools
- Strong command of brand strategy frameworks, communications planning models, and audience segmentation techniques.
- Hands-on experience with content management systems and digital publishing workflows for managing web and social content.
- Familiarity with major social media platforms and best practices for community engagement and moderation.
- Knowledge of media monitoring and analytics platforms used to track brand sentiment, share of voice, and coverage.
- Comfort with design collaboration and review tools for evaluating and approving creative assets and campaign materials.
- Solid project management skills with the ability to juggle multiple concurrent campaigns, deadlines, and cross-functional initiatives.

- This position reports to the Chief Marketing Officer or the equivalent senior marketing leader at Kickstarter PBC.
- The role is fully remote, and candidates should have a dedicated home office setup with reliable internet for video calls and focused, uninterrupted work.
