Senior QA Test Automation Engineer
Job description
Senior QA Test Automation Engineer at Justplay Gmbh.
About the role
You will own the end-to-end test automation strategy for our Unity-based mobile titles on iOS and Android, turning quality requirements into robust technical solutions. This role requires you to architect frameworks that are scalable, maintainable, and aligned with industry best practices across the product lifecycle. You will define and drive the automation roadmap in collaboration with Games QA, Game Developers, and SDK/Engine partners to ensure quality is built in from the start. A pragmatic mindset is essential, as you will balance automation delivery with the flexibility to perform manual testing when release timelines or complex issues demand it. You will act as a quality advocate, shaping standards and influencing engineering decisions to reduce risk and increase deployment confidence. Your work will directly protect release stability by integrating automated checks into CI/CD workflows, enabling faster feedback and safer delivery. You will mentor and collaborate with cross-functional teams, translating product goals into executable test scenarios that validate gameplay, integrations, and backend services. Ultimately, this position is about building a durable automation foundation that accelerates development while maintaining the highest level of product quality.
Key facts
What you'll do
Lead the design and implementation of a scalable test automation framework for Unity mobile games, ensuring coverage across unit, integration, and end-to-end test scenarios.
Architect and maintain backend/API test automation suites using REST principles and OpenAPI specifications to validate server interactions, data integrity, and service reliability.
Develop and optimize automated tests in Unity using C#, while leveraging TypeScript, JavaScript, or Python for tooling, orchestration, and CI script maintenance.
Drive the automation of mobile game testing on iOS and Android devices, including performance, regression, and integration scenarios across diverse device configurations.
Design, implement, and scale automation frameworks that are resilient to change, support parallel execution, and provide actionable insights through reporting and metrics.
Establish and enforce automation standards, best practices, and coding guidelines to promote consistency, reusability, and maintainability across test suites.
Collaborate closely with Game Developers to improve testability, advocate for quality-by-design principles, and reduce friction in the development and release process.
Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines to enforce quality gates, prevent regressions, and protect the main branch from unstable builds.
Support critical release validation by performing manual testing and exploratory testing when automation does not cover edge cases or urgent verification is required.
Utilize AltTester for in-game UI and gameplay automation, and Maestro for mobile E2E/UI automation, while evaluating and incorporating alternative tools where appropriate.
Provide clear, concise communication to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, documenting test strategies, results, and recommendations in a structured manner.
Mentor junior QA engineers and automation engineers, sharing knowledge, elevating code quality, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement in testing practices.
Continuously assess and introduce new tools, frameworks, and methodologies to evolve the automation landscape and keep pace with industry advancements.
Act as a subject matter expert in mobile test automation, advising on tool selection, framework enhancements, and risk mitigation strategies.
Ensure all testing activities align with project timelines, quality standards, and compliance requirements while promoting a proactive quality mindset across the organization.
Requirements
Candidates must possess a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in QA automation, with a proven track record of senior-level ownership and delivery in complex environments.
You must have hands-on experience designing and validating backend and API testing using REST principles and OpenAPI/Swagger-based specifications to ensure service correctness and resilience.
You are required to have strong, practical experience working with Unity and writing test logic in C#, including interactions with game objects, components, and runtime systems.
You must demonstrate proficiency in at least one of the following scripting or programming languages: TypeScript, JavaScript, or Python, specifically for building automation tooling and CI workflows.
You must have direct experience testing mobile game applications on both iOS and Android platforms, understanding platform-specific behaviors, performance characteristics, and device fragmentation.
You are expected to have a proven ability to design, implement, and scale automation frameworks that are maintainable, extensible, and reliable over time.
You must have hands-on experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines, configuring triggers, handling test execution environments, and managing test data securely.
You must possess strong debugging and analytical skills, enabling you to isolate root causes, analyze logs, and resolve complex issues in distributed systems.
You must be capable of balancing strategic ownership of the automation roadmap with hands-on implementation, contributing to both high-level design and detailed code changes.
You must be willing and able to contribute to manual testing efforts when necessary to support releases, investigate production issues, or validate exploratory scenarios.
You must demonstrate excellent collaboration and communication skills, working effectively with cross-functional teams and translating requirements into testable conditions.
You must have practical experience with AltTester for in-game UI and gameplay automation and Maestro for mobile E2E/UI automation, or comparable mobile automation frameworks.
