What you'll do

• Interpret and analyze blueprints and technical drawings to determine the specifications and requirements for steel fabrication.
• Assemble and fit structural steel components, ensuring precise alignment and secure connections.
• Operate various tools and machinery, including cutting torches, welding equipment, and grinders, to shape and join steel parts.
• Conduct quality checks on finished products to ensure compliance with industry standards and project specifications.
• Collaborate with engineers and project managers to troubleshoot any issues that arise during the fabrication process.
• Maintain a clean and organized work environment, adhering to safety protocols and best practices.
• Participate in regular team meetings to discuss project progress and address any challenges.
• Train and mentor junior fitters and apprentices, sharing your knowledge and expertise to foster their development.
• Document work completed and report on project status to management, ensuring transparency and accountability.
• Assist in the preparation of materials and supplies needed for upcoming projects, ensuring timely availability.
• Follow all company policies and procedures, particularly those related to safety and quality assurance.
• Engage in continuous learning to stay updated on industry trends, tools, and techniques relevant to structural steel fitting.

Requirements

• Minimum of 3 years of experience in structural steel fitting or a related field.
• Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
• Strong knowledge of welding techniques and fabrication processes.
• Familiarity with safety regulations and best practices in a manufacturing or construction environment.
• Ability to operate various hand and power tools safely and effectively.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to collaborate effectively with team members and management.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability.
• Physical stamina and strength to perform manual labor and lift heavy materials as needed.
• High school diploma or equivalent; relevant certifications in welding or fabrication are a plus.

Nice to have

• Experience with CNC machinery and automated fabrication processes.
• Knowledge of structural steel codes and standards, such as AISC and AWS.
• Previous experience in a supervisory or leadership role within a fitting team.
• Familiarity with project management software and tools.
• Certification in forklift operation or other heavy machinery.
• Bilingual skills, particularly in Spanish, can be an asset for communication within diverse teams.

Skills & tools

• Proficiency in welding techniques, including MIG, TIG, and stick welding.
• Familiarity with fabrication tools such as plasma cutters, band saws, and drill presses.
• Strong mathematical skills for accurate measurements and calculations.
• Ability to use measuring instruments like calipers, tape measures, and levels.
• Knowledge of safety equipment and personal protective gear (PPE) relevant to the role.
