Structural Engineer - Modular Steel Systems
Job description
Structural Engineer - Modular Steel Systems at Gtifabrication.
About the role
GTI is a contract manufacturing partner supporting customers in renewable energy, power generation, infrastructure, and industrial systems. As the Structural Engineer - Modular Steel Systems, you own the complete structural design and analysis workflow for modular steel enclosures and skids, ensuring every calculation, model, and detail aligns with project requirements and GTI values. You own the development of fabrication-ready models and detailed drawings for large welded assemblies, containerized structures, and high-load industrial systems from initial concept through production release. You own collaboration with fabrication, electrical integration, and quality teams to resolve structural challenges, drive design for manufacturability, and maintain strict safety and compliance standards. You own the validation of structural performance through simulation, prototyping, and testing to confirm that designs meet load, deflection, and durability criteria under real-world conditions. You own proactive risk identification, creating and executing mitigation plans to prevent production delays, rework, or safety incidents across the project lifecycle. You own the documentation and communication of design decisions to both internal stakeholders and external partners, ensuring clarity, traceability, and consistency across all deliverables. You own continuous improvement of engineering processes and standards, applying lessons learned from prototype builds and production runs to enhance quality, speed, and reliability over time.
Key facts
What you'll do
Perform detailed structural analysis for modular steel systems, including load combinations, stress checks, deflection limits, and fatigue assessment using analysis tools.
Develop comprehensive design calculations and verification reports that demonstrate compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project specifications for every steel structure.
Create and maintain accurate 2D drawings and 3D models of fabricated enclosures, skids, and containerized units, ensuring dimensions, weld details, and annotations are production-ready.
Lead design for manufacturability reviews with fabrication teams, identifying constructability issues and optimizing designs to reduce complexity, cost, and build time.
Support prototype builds and testing activities, collecting measurement and performance data, diagnosing structural issues, and implementing corrective design actions as needed.
Coordinate with electrical and mechanical engineers to integrate components into modular structures, ensuring clearances, load paths, and mounting conditions are properly addressed.
Generate and review shop drawings, fabrication checklists, and assembly instructions to guide welders, fabricators, and installers on the shop floor.
Conduct quality assurance checks of structural drawings and models, catching errors before release to prevent field issues and rework.
Perform structural assessments for modifications to existing designs, evaluating the impact of changes on load paths, stability, and compliance.
Assist in developing and maintaining engineering standards, best practices, and design templates that improve consistency and efficiency across programs.
Support customer-facing discussions by preparing technical explanations, design rationales, and validation data for enclosures and skids.
Apply engineering judgment to interpret requirements, resolve ambiguous specifications, and define appropriate structural solutions without direct precedent.
Contribute to project schedules and risk logs, providing accurate assessments of effort, lead times, and dependencies for structural tasks.
Collaborate with sourcing and procurement teams to assess vendor capabilities, material availability, and lead times that affect structural delivery.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering or a closely related technical field from an accredited institution.
Demonstrated experience in structural engineering, with a strong background in steel design, welded assemblies, and load analysis for industrial equipment.
Proficiency with structural analysis software such as SAP2000, ETABS, or similar tools, and with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Creo, or AutoCAD for model development and detailing.
Solid understanding of steel design codes and standards, including AISC, AWS D1.1, and relevant international standards as applicable to project scope.
Experience designing large welded fabrications, modular steel structures, or containerized systems is highly valued and directly aligned with the role focus.
Strong knowledge of mechanical integration requirements, including supports, mounts, and load transfers for equipment within modular enclosures.
Proven ability to interpret engineering specifications, codes, and customer requirements, translating them into detailed design and verification activities.
Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze failure modes, conduct root cause investigations, and implement effective corrective actions.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear technical documents, calculations, and drawings for diverse audiences.
Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team, managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Willingness to travel up to 25% of the time to support project needs, including visits to customer sites, fabrication facilities, and testing locations as required.
U.S. work authorization required, with eligibility to obtain any necessary security clearances or export control certifications as applicable to the role and customer requirements.
Must be able to pass background checks and meet any contractual or regulatory compliance standards for work on government or critical infrastructure programs.
Nice to have
Previous experience in bridge or suspended structure design, with familiarity with live load, impact, and fatigue considerations in those contexts.
Experience in renewable energy, power generation, or infrastructure markets, where safety, reliability, and strict compliance are paramount.
Knowledge of industry standards for bolted connections, steel erection practices, and field installation constraints.
Experience with automated design tools, parametric modeling, or script-based workflows that can accelerate design iterations and reduce manual errors.
Understanding of lean manufacturing principles and design for assembly methods that improve production efficiency and reduce field installation effort.
Practical notes
This role may require up to 25% travel to support project activities, including design reviews, prototype builds, and field installations.
U.S. work authorization is required, and candidates must be eligible for background checks and any necessary certifications tied to customer programs.
