Managing Director of Technology
Job description
About the role
This role is for a Managing Director of Technology who will own the technical strategy and execution for Human Agency as we scale. You will lead client delivery on our largest engagements and serve as the primary technical voice in conversations with C-suite stakeholders. You will define and build the repeatable models, frameworks, and systems that turn ambitious AI ideas into shipped solutions. You will hire, develop, and lead a high-performing engineering team that can operate with autonomy in complex environments. You will make platform and infrastructure decisions that shape how we build and deploy AI systems responsibly. If you thrive at the intersection of hands-on coding and executive communication, this is your role to own.
Key facts
What you'll do
Lead technical delivery for our largest enterprise engagements, serving as the most senior technical person in client rooms and defining what is feasible while designing architectures that ship.
Build how we deliver at scale by creating repeatable models, discovery frameworks, reference architectures, deployment templates, and evaluation routines that the team can use without constant oversight.
Hire and develop a technical team, setting the bar for talent, owning the pipeline, and making hiring decisions that raise the quality of our engineering capabilities.
Own platform and infrastructure decisions, including build versus buy choices, tooling, deployment strategies, and security, while setting architectural direction for production systems.
Shape our AI strategy through hands-on experience, making technical bets on LLM orchestration, RAG, agents, and evaluation based on what creates real client value rather than theoretical trends.
Translate complex technical trade-offs into clear explanations for non-technical executives, enabling high-stakes decisions without sacrificing technical rigor.
Get into the weeds to unblock teams and solve hard problems directly, ensuring momentum when systems or people face obstacles that require immediate technical leadership.
Establish guardrails and operational practices that allow the engineering team to move quickly while maintaining reliability, security, and responsible AI standards.
Evaluate and adopt tools and infrastructure that reduce friction across the delivery lifecycle, from scoping and staffing to deployment and ongoing operations.
Champion a builder-first culture where accountability, curiosity, and rapid learning align with our commitment to ship impactful solutions that transform client operations.
Requirements
You have built and shipped AI or ML systems in production that are relied upon by real users, not prototypes or short-lived demos.
You have hired and led technical teams of at least five people, navigating the challenges of growth and evolving your approach as organizations scale.
You can explain intricate technical trade-offs to non-technical executives in ways that support confident, informed decision-making in high-stakes contexts.
You hold strong, evidence-based opinions on AI architecture and are willing to revise them when new data and results demand it.
You are comfortable working in the implementation trenches, diving into production-level detail to resolve issues and unblock engineering teams when necessary.
You know cloud infrastructure and engineering practices well enough to make platform and deployment decisions with confidence and clarity.
You prefer hands-on problem-solving and direct contribution over purely delegative management styles when technical challenges arise.
You understand the realities of client delivery, including statement of work structures, staffing models, and the constraints of services-based engagements.
Nice to have
You have scaled a startup or early-stage company, having built teams, systems, and processes while navigating the associated growing pains.
You have experience in services or consultancy models, including comfort with statement of work arrangements, staffing, and client delivery workflows.
You maintain a network of engineers you have worked with and would confidently hire again for demanding technical roles.
Practical notes
Periodic travel may be required for client work, team offsites, and industry events, typically in the range of 10-20%.
