Managing Director of Technology
Job description
About the role
You will own the technical strategy and execution for Human Agency's largest enterprise engagements. You are the most senior technical authority on client projects and translate ambiguous problems into production-ready systems. You will define how we build and deploy AI solutions at scale while mentoring engineers who ship real products. You will partner with C-suite stakeholders to align technical decisions with business outcomes. You will evolve our platform and practices so the company can scale without losing quality or accountability. You will be the architect and operator of the systems that power our clients' critical workflows. If you thrive on turning complex technical work into reliable outcomes, this role is built for you.
Key facts
What you'll do
Lead technical delivery for our largest enterprise clients and serve as the primary technical decision-maker in client rooms.
Design and evolve repeatable delivery models, discovery frameworks, reference architectures, and deployment templates that the team can execute without constant oversight.
Hire, develop, and lead a high-performing engineering team, setting the technical bar and guiding career growth through feedback and architecture coaching.
Own platform and infrastructure choices, including build versus buy analysis, tooling, deployment strategies, and security considerations.
Shape AI strategy through hands-on experience, deciding which technologies move from prototype to production based on client value.
Explain complex technical trade-offs to non-technical executives in ways that support confident decision-making under uncertainty.
Get into the weeds to unblock teams and solve critical production issues when things break or timelines are at risk.
Make platform decisions with confidence, leveraging deep knowledge of cloud infrastructure and engineering best practices.
Determine the technical roadmap for LLM orchestration, RAG, agents, evaluation, and fine-tuning based on real-world implementation experience.
Build the systems and routines that make multiple concurrent engagements predictable, scalable, and maintainable.
Establish evaluation routines and operational guardrails that ensure delivered systems perform reliably in production environments.
Partner with leadership to balance innovation with delivery, ensuring technical bets align with client priorities and business impact.
Champion responsible AI practices, embedding transparency, human oversight, privacy, and security into the systems we deliver.
Requirements
You have built and shipped AI or ML systems in production that are actively used and depended on by others.
You have hired and led technical teams of at least five people, navigating the challenges of team growth and scaling processes.
You can communicate sophisticated technical trade-offs to non-technical executives and influence decisions in high-stakes environments.
You hold strong, evidence-based opinions on AI architecture and are willing to revise them when new data warrants it.
You are comfortable working directly in production codebases and debugging issues when systems fail or teams are blocked.
You know cloud infrastructure and engineering practices well enough to make platform decisions with confidence.
You prefer hands-on problem-solving and getting into the details rather than delegating technical depth.
You are based in or eligible to work in the United States or Canada, with openness to periodic travel for client work and team events.
Nice to have
Prior experience scaling a startup or early-stage company by building teams, systems, and processes.
Experience working in services or consultancy models, including managing statement of work arrangements and client delivery structures.
A network of engineers you have worked with previously and would feel comfortable hiring again in the future.
