Homeward is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead technical teams and drive the development of their homebuying platform. This role involves overseeing engineering projects, mentoring developers, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality software products that serve homebuyers nationwide. The Engineering Manager will be responsible for setting technical direction, managing team performance, and ensuring that engineering practices align with company goals and strategic priorities. This is a remote position available to candidates anywhere in the United States, offering flexibility while maintaining close collaboration with distributed colleagues across multiple time zones.

What you'll do
Lead a team of software engineers through the full product development lifecycle from initial planning through deployment.
Set technical strategy and architecture decisions for assigned product areas within the homebuying platform and related services.
Mentor and develop engineers by providing regular feedback, conducting thorough performance reviews, and actively supporting career growth.
Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other stakeholders to define project scope, priorities, and success metrics.
Establish and maintain engineering best practices including code review processes, development standards, and documentation requirements.
Drive continuous improvement by identifying bottlenecks in existing workflows and implementing meaningful process optimizations across the team.
Represent the engineering team in cross-departmental meetings, company-wide planning sessions, and external partner discussions to align on priorities.
Manage hiring efforts end-to-end including writing job descriptions, screening candidates, conducting technical interviews, and making offers.
Ensure project timelines are met by tracking progress regularly, removing blockers for the team, and escalating risks when needed.
Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, open communication, and continuous learning within the engineering organization.
Requirements
Proven experience managing engineering teams, typically five or more years in a senior leadership capacity.
Strong background in software engineering with hands-on experience building and shipping production-ready products.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to convey technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
Experience working with remote teams and managing distributed engineering organizations across multiple time zones and geographies.
Demonstrated ability to make informed technical decisions and guide teams through complex architectural challenges.
Familiarity with modern software development practices including agile methodologies, test-driven development, and CI/CD pipelines.
Track record of building and retaining high-performing engineering teams through intentional hiring and development.
Bachelor's degree in computer science or a closely related field, or equivalent practical experience and self-directed learning.
Nice to have
Experience with homebuying, mortgage, or real estate technology platforms is highly valued and preferred.
Knowledge of cloud infrastructure and distributed systems at scale is beneficial for this role.
Previous exposure to financial services or regulated industries can be advantageous.
Comfort with ambiguity and ability to thrive in a fast-moving startup environment is important.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment are essential.
Skills & tools
Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Python, Java, or Go.
Experience with cloud platforms like AWS or GCP for deploying and managing applications.
Familiarity with containerization technologies including Docker and Kubernetes for orchestrating services.
Knowledge of version control systems, particularly Git, and associated branching workflows.
Understanding of database systems including both relational databases and NoSQL options.
Experience with project management and team communication tools such as Slack and Jira.
Awareness of security best practices and compliance requirements relevant to consumer-facing financial technology products.
