About the role
Homeward is seeking a senior front-end software engineer to help shape the user experience of their platform and drive meaningful improvements for homebuyers. This role centers on building and refining the interfaces that customers interact with during the homebuying journey, from initial search to final transaction. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams including product managers and designers to translate complex product needs into polished, responsive web applications. As a senior contributor, this person will guide technical direction, review code from peers, and help set engineering standards across the front-end organization while contributing to the long-term vision of the product.

What you'll do
- Design and implement front-end components that deliver a smooth and intuitive user experience for customers navigating the homebuying process.
- Build reusable UI modules and component libraries that can be shared across multiple products and platforms within the company.
- Write clean, well-documented, and maintainable code following established patterns and team conventions to ensure long-term code health.
- Collaborate closely with designers to translate detailed mockups and interactive prototypes into fully functional and accessible web interfaces.
- Participate actively in code reviews to ensure quality, consistency, and knowledge sharing across the entire engineering team.
- Debug and resolve front-end issues reported by users or internal stakeholders using systematic troubleshooting and diagnostic techniques.
- Contribute to architectural discussions around front-end tooling, state management strategies, and overall application performance optimization approaches for the platform.
- Mentor junior engineers through pair programming sessions, code walkthroughs, and guided technical career development within the engineering organization.
- Stay current with emerging front-end practices, evaluate new technologies, and assess their applicability to the company's product roadmap.
- Work closely with back-end engineers to define and implement clear API contracts for front-end consumption and integration.
- Help establish front-end best practices, coding standards, and comprehensive documentation that the entire team can follow consistently.
- Participate in sprint planning and estimation discussions to help break down product features into actionable and well-scoped development tasks.
Requirements
- Proven experience building front-end applications using modern JavaScript frameworks and libraries in a production environment.
- Strong understanding of HTML, CSS, and responsive design principles applied to cross-browser compatible interfaces.
- Familiarity with version control systems, particularly Git, for collaborative development workflows and code management.
- Experience working in a remote or distributed team environment with effective communication and collaboration practices.
- Ability to write comprehensive unit and integration tests to ensure code reliability and prevent regressions.
- Good communication skills for collaborating effectively with designers, product managers, and other engineering team members.
- A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience in software development.
- Several years of professional software development experience with a sustained focus on front-end engineering and user interfaces.
- Demonstrated ability to take ownership of features and see them through from concept to production deployment.
Nice to have
- Experience with TypeScript or statically typed languages in a front-end development context.
- Familiarity with CSS-in-JS libraries or modern CSS methodologies such as utility-first frameworks.
- Exposure to performance monitoring tools and front-end analytics platforms for measuring user interactions.
- Knowledge of accessibility standards and inclusive design practices for building usable web applications.
- Prior experience at a fast-growing technology company or startup environment.
Skills & tools
- JavaScript and modern front-end frameworks such as React or similar libraries for building interactive interfaces.
- HTML5 and CSS3 with a focus on responsive and adaptive layouts for various screen sizes.
- Git for source control and collaborative code management across distributed engineering teams.
- Testing frameworks including Jest or equivalent tools for front-end validation and quality assurance.
- RESTful APIs and experience consuming back-end services from the front end in a production setting.
- Webpack or Vite for build tooling and module bundling in a modern development workflow.
