Full Stack Engineer
Job description
About the role
HomeLight develops technology to simplify real estate transactions for buyers and sellers. We are seeking an engineer to build intelligent systems where artificial intelligence is a core component of the product architecture rather than an add-on. In this capacity, you will own the design and execution of features that bridge traditional product development with advanced artificial intelligence methodologies. You will be responsible for translating ambiguous business requirements into robust technical specifications that balance user experience with system performance. Your work will directly influence how agents and consumers interact with critical real estate decisioning tools in a high-visibility marketplace. You will act as a technical leader in shaping the architecture of services that must scale under demanding market conditions. This role requires a proactive mindset to identify bottlenecks and implement solutions that enhance the reliability of the transaction ecosystem. You will collaborate closely with data scientists and product strategists to ensure that deployed models align with business objectives and user needs.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Architect and implement scalable product features by partnering with product managers, designers, and cross-functional stakeholders to define technical roadmaps.
- Develop and maintain high-quality backend services using Ruby on Rails, ensuring that APIs are performant, secure, and well-documented for consumption by other teams.
- Create responsive and accessible frontend interfaces using React.js and React Native, optimizing for fast load times and seamless interactions across devices.
- Integrate advanced AI capabilities such as large language models, automated decisioning agents, semantic search, and workflow automation into existing production systems.
- Architect robust systems that connect service-oriented structures with AI orchestration layers and evaluation loops to enable continuous learning and improvement.
- Manage code quality through rigorous testing strategies, systematic refactoring efforts, and deployment automation to reduce manual errors and accelerate releases.
- Review peer-generated code, including AI-assisted output, for adherence to standards around security, performance, and long-term maintainability.
- Monitor production systems using observability tools to detect anomalies, analyze performance trends, and ensure high reliability for end users.
- Collaborate with data and research teams to validate AI model outputs and incorporate feedback loops that improve system accuracy over time.
- Break down complex product initiatives into manageable technical tasks while maintaining a clear understanding of dependencies across the codebase.
- Mentor junior engineers by providing constructive feedback on design choices, code reviews, and debugging strategies to elevate the overall team capability.
- Contribute to the definition of operational playbooks that guide incident response, rollback procedures, and postmortem analysis.
- Explore and prototype new technologies that could provide a competitive edge in real estate data visualization or user engagement.
- Ensure that all implemented solutions comply with relevant data privacy regulations and internal governance policies.
Requirements
- Possess 2+ years of professional software engineering experience in a role where you delivered production-grade applications.
- Demonstrate 2+ years of hands-on production experience with Ruby on Rails, including ActiveRecord, background jobs, and middleware.
- Show 2+ years of experience building user interfaces with React.js or React Native, including state management and component lifecycle patterns.
- Have hands-on experience building or integrating AI features into business workflows, such as chatbots, recommendation systems, or automated assistants.
- Exhibit a strong understanding of designing and maintaining service-oriented architectures, including RESTful APIs and asynchronous communication patterns.
- Show proficiency with both relational databases such as PostgreSQL and non-relational data stores used for scaling specific workloads.
- Have practical experience with observability and monitoring systems like NewRelic, CloudWatch, or Sentry to diagnose issues in production.
- Communicate effectively in English, both in written documentation and verbal discussions with cross-functional partners.
Nice to have
- Experience working with vector databases, embeddings, and retrieval-augmented generation patterns to enhance AI-driven features.
- Knowledge of ElasticSearch for implementing advanced search and analytics capabilities over large datasets.
- Familiarity with Docker and containerized environments for consistent development, testing, and deployment workflows.
- Understanding of the Amazon AWS ecosystem, including services like Lambda, S3, RDS, and ECS used in scalable architectures.
- Experience working in small, fast-moving startup environments where ownership and rapid iteration are essential.
- Contributions to open-source projects or personal AI initiatives that demonstrate curiosity and mastery of emerging tools.
