High Tech High originated in September 2000, founded by a coalition of San Diego civic leaders and educators as a small public charter school. It has since grown into an integrated network of sixteen charter schools, serving approximately 6,350 students from kindergarten through grade

Position Summary

The Special Education Academic Coach III is tasked with ensuring that students with exceptional diverse needs can access the general education curriculum. This role focuses predominantly on working with one student who has intensive needs. The coach provides essential, individualized support to facilitate student success within the school environment.

Key Responsibilities

The incumbent will assist classroom teachers by delivering direct, one-to-one support to a student with intensive educational and/or medical requirements. These duties are varied and require a high degree of attentiveness and adaptability.

Responsibilities include implementing a student health plan and attending to daily health needs. This encompasses providing toileting and hygiene support as required. The coach will also be responsible for executing a behavior intervention plan through consistent and supportive engagement.

Academic support involves delivering one-to-one instruction in a separate setting and assisting with the instruction and supervision of students with learning differences. The role requires the coach to work in varied instructional formats, moving between small group settings and solo drills to deliver focused academic instruction.

Physical support is a critical component of this position, requiring the lifting or transferring of students in accordance with safety protocols. The coach will also monitor student progress meticulously and provide input for evaluations using provided templates and resources.

A further duty is to establish rapport and build meaningful relationships with referred students. This focus on relationship-building is intended to improve student behavior, educational performance, and social integration within the classroom. The role also includes performing clerical support functions, such as typing, completing documents, maintaining records, and handling correspondence, which may include note-taking for student records.

Required Competencies and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will demonstrate specific competencies centered on interpersonal interaction and planning. Key competencies include building relationships, written and oral communication, the ability to evaluate alternatives, strong interpersonal skills, active listening, motivation, teamwork, and the creation of plans and goal setting.

Candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED. This requirement is satisfied by holding an Associate's degree or higher, or by completing 48 or more eligible units of coursework at a recognized college or university. Alternatively, candidates must meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment, knowledge and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics.

Desired Qualifications

Prior experience in a school or learning environment is essential. The position requires more than six months of experience in implementing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Additionally, the candidate must have more than six months of experience supporting student medical needs within a school context.

Compensation and Benefits

This is an hourly position with variable hours, not to exceed 35 per week. It is classified as part-time and does not initially qualify for benefits.
