About the role
Gmining Ventures is seeking a skilled Tug Master to join our team at the Oko Barge Landing in Georgetown. This permanent position is crucial for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our tugboats, which play a vital role in our mining operations. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in maritime navigation and vessel handling, demonstrating a commitment to safety and operational excellence.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Oversee the safe navigation and operation of tugboats in support of barge operations, ensuring compliance with all maritime regulations and safety protocols.
- Coordinate with the barge crew and other marine personnel to facilitate the loading and unloading of materials and equipment at the Oko Barge Landing.
- Conduct regular inspections of the tugboat and associated equipment to ensure they are in optimal working condition, reporting any maintenance needs to the appropriate personnel.
- Develop and implement operational plans for towing and mooring activities, adapting to changing conditions and ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
- Maintain accurate logs of all vessel movements, operational activities, and incidents, ensuring compliance with company and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Train and mentor junior crew members on safe vessel operation, emergency procedures, and best practices in maritime navigation.
- Collaborate with shore-based management and support teams to optimize operational efficiency and address any logistical challenges that may arise.
- Participate in safety drills and emergency response training, ensuring readiness for any potential incidents on the water.
- Engage in continuous professional development to stay updated on industry trends, regulations, and technological advancements in marine operations.
- Foster a culture of safety and teamwork among crew members, promoting open communication and proactive problem-solving.
- Ensure that all safety equipment and personal protective gear are available and properly maintained for all crew members on board.
- Liaise with port authorities and other stakeholders to ensure compliance with local maritime laws and regulations during operations.
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Tug Master or in a similar maritime role, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in tugboat operations.
- Valid maritime certifications, including a Master's license and any additional endorsements required for tug operations.
- Strong knowledge of maritime navigation, safety regulations, and vessel handling procedures.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to effectively manage a diverse crew.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, demonstrating strong problem-solving skills and adaptability.
- Proficient in the use of navigational equipment and technology, including GPS, radar, and communication systems.
- Strong commitment to safety and environmental stewardship, with a track record of promoting safe work practices.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, as operational needs dictate.
- Familiarity with the local waterways and maritime conditions in the Georgetown area is a plus.

- Experience working in the mining industry or in support of mining operations.
- Additional certifications in safety management or emergency response training.
- Proficiency in multiple languages, particularly those spoken in the local community.
- Previous experience in training or mentoring junior crew members.
