Senior Engineering Manager, Video Enablement

About the role

This role owns the end-to-end video enablement strategy for our live streaming and highlight capabilities in youth sports. You will manage the design, build, and operation of the core video pipeline that processes millions of streams and hundreds of millions of clips annually. You will define the technical vision for video enablement while collaborating cross-functionally to simplify integration for product teams. You will mentor and grow a high-performing team of engineers, fostering a culture of ownership and craft. You will act as a hands-on leader, staying close to code to maintain credibility and technical guidance. You will continuously measure and improve the user experience for live and on-demand video.

What you'll do

Partner with the Director of Video Engineering and product managers to shape and execute the GC video streaming roadmap, ensuring alignment with business goals.

Lead the design, build, and support of core video capabilities including third-party device integration, mobile-first live streaming, ingest, transcoding, storage, and playback.

Define and enforce architecture principles and best practices for the video enablement team to ensure consistency and scalability.

Hire, onboard, and develop mobile, backend, and infrastructure engineers, mentoring them into future technical leaders.

Review code and troubleshoot production issues to maintain a high-quality, resilient video pipeline in AWS.

Collaborate with infrastructure teams to optimize cost, reliability, and performance of our live streaming infrastructure.

Simplify the developer experience by building clear interfaces, documentation, and tools for product teams integrating video.

Own the monitoring and improvement of live and VOD streaming quality using data and user feedback.

Support critical production incidents and contribute to on-call responsibilities when needed.

Enable computer vision and product teams by providing robust video infrastructure and APIs.

Maintain deep expertise in video streaming technologies to guide long-term strategic decisions.

Champion a culture of curiosity, ownership, and continuous learning within the team.

Requirements

You must have a strong background in video and audio streaming technologies, with hands-on experience in user-generated content and live streaming.

You must have a proven track record of delivering projects in the video streaming space while managing and mentoring engineering teams.

You must have a solid understanding of software engineering principles and cloud architecture, specifically within a resilient and scalable video infrastructure environment using AWS.

You must be comfortable operating as a player-coach, writing code when needed to stay credible with the team.

You must have experience coding in languages common in the video space such as Go, Rust, or C#, and familiarity with Node, TypeScript, React, or mobile languages like Kotlin or Swift.

You must have excellent communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and influence through ideas rather than authority.

You must be able to think strategically and contribute to the long-term vision of the engineering organization.

You must have a leadership style rooted in collaboration, earning trust by listening first and influencing through thoughtful ideas.

Nice to have

Experience with device integration for cameras such as GoPro and Mevo is preferred.

Knowledge of transcoding workflows and media pipelines is a plus.

Familiarity with computer vision workflows in sports applications is preferred.

Experience coaching or mentoring engineers to staff and grow teams is valued.

Practical notes

This is a full-time remote position based in the United States.

Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.

The role may require occasional travel for team offsites or company events.

Candidates must be available to participate in production on-call rotations.

The position reports to the Director of Video Engineering.

Candidates should be prepared to demonstrate a portfolio of shipped video streaming projects and technical leadership examples during the interview process.
