Flow Traders is on the lookout for a Staff Engineer to join our dynamic team in Amsterdam. We are searching for a seasoned professional who can lead the architectural and technical direction of our Trading Automation and Backend Engineering teams, tackling challenges that span the entire trade lifecycle.

What you'll do
- Take charge of defining and managing the long-term technical architecture for trading automation, risk management, and post-trade systems.
- Translate intricate business challenges into clear and actionable technical roadmaps that drive progress.
- Design and implement scalable, event-driven architectures that emphasize high throughput, data integrity, and system reliability.
- Elevate engineering standards across the organization, focusing on system design, observability, reliability, and scalability.
- Provide mentorship to senior engineers and guide technical leads to ensure alignment in technical strategies across various teams.
- Supervise the careful decommissioning of outdated systems, transitioning to modern, scalable solutions.
- Work closely with trading, quantitative analysis, risk management, and operations teams to ensure that technical decisions support business goals.
- Advocate for automation in post-trade and middle-office processes to significantly reduce operational risks and enhance efficiency.
Requirements
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in software engineering, with a strong history in roles such as Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer, or cross-team Lead.
- Proven ability to influence senior technical and business stakeholders, achieving consensus across diverse teams.
- Extensive experience in building distributed, high-performance, and reliable backend systems.
- Proficiency in one or more core backend programming languages, including Python, Go, C++, or Java. Familiarity with event-driven architectures (like Kafka, Flink, Databricks, or Dataproc) and data pipeline development is essential.
- A thorough understanding of modern infrastructure, observability practices, and cloud platforms is required.
Nice to have
- Deep knowledge of specific financial workflows, including ETF creation/redemption, clearing, and custody processes.
- Experience with financial reference data, symbology, or instrument modeling.
- Familiarity with regulatory frameworks such as MiFID II, EMIR, and SFTR, along with their data lineage requirements.
- A solid background in financial services, trading, or market making is advantageous.
- Strong comprehension of the trading lifecycle, including order flow, execution, and post-trade/settlement processes.
