Flow Traders is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead and develop their growing engineering organization in London. In this role, you will be responsible for guiding a team of software engineers through the full lifecycle of building and maintaining trading systems. You will shape the technical vision for your team while ensuring that delivery timelines and quality standards are consistently met. The position requires close collaboration with other engineering managers and senior leaders to align technical work with the company's strategic goals, and you will also play a key part in fostering a positive engineering culture that emphasizes accountability, continuous learning, and improvement across every project and initiative.

What you'll do
Lead a team of engineers, providing guidance, coaching, and career development support to help each individual grow and succeed
Drive the planning, prioritization, and execution of engineering projects across the organization in close coordination with product teams
Establish and maintain engineering standards, including code quality practices, review workflows, and comprehensive documentation expectations for the team
Partner with product management and design to clarify requirements, assess feasibility, and define technical approaches for new features
Participate in architectural discussions, evaluating trade-offs and recommending solutions that balance performance, maintainability, and scalability across the entire platform
Own the hiring process for engineering roles, from writing job descriptions to conducting interviews and extending offers to candidates
Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with each team member to discuss progress, challenges, and professional aspirations in a supportive setting
Track team metrics such as velocity, delivery predictability, and incident response times to identify areas for ongoing improvement and growth
Represent the engineering function in cross-functional forums, sharing updates and gathering valuable feedback from stakeholders across the company and beyond
Ensure that all delivered software meets expectations for reliability, security, and performance in a production environment at scale
Requirements
Proven experience managing engineering teams, with a clear track record of building and retaining high-performing groups over multiple years
Strong foundation in software engineering principles, with the ability to contribute meaningfully to technical conversations and decisions
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex business objectives into clear and actionable technical plans
Experience with agile development practices and iterative delivery methods to manage changing priorities and shifting requirements effectively
A degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related technical field, or equivalent hands-on industry experience
The ability to balance strategic leadership responsibilities with hands-on involvement in technical decision-making and code reviews
Strong organizational abilities, with the capacity to manage multiple workstreams and shifting deadlines without ever sacrificing code quality
A collaborative mindset that thrives in a fast-paced environment where cross-team coordination and open communication are essential
Nice to have
Experience working in financial services, electronic trading, or a similarly demanding and highly regulated industry environment
Familiarity with distributed systems design and the challenges of building low-latency, high-throughput applications at scale
Background in helping other managers develop their leadership skills and grow into more senior roles over time
Exposure to modern cloud platforms and infrastructure-as-code practices for managing scalable, resilient, and highly available systems

Team leadership and people management frameworks for motivating, developing, and retaining top engineering talent across the organization
Software development lifecycle knowledge spanning planning, coding, testing, deployment, and ongoing production monitoring
Version control systems and collaborative code review practices to maintain codebase health and consistency

Technical architecture evaluation skills for assessing system designs and identifying potential risks early
