Engineering Lead

About the role

At Flock, you will own the technical leadership and delivery of the Acquisition engineering team as an Engineering Lead, operating as a hands-on contributor rather than a manager. You will partner directly with the Product Manager to translate business goals into clear technical scope and success metrics for connected vehicle insurance products. This role requires you to write high-quality, well-tested TypeScript and maintain full ownership of end-to-end delivery to production. You will shape how the team leverages AI tools and coding agents to increase shipping speed without compromising the quality bar. Additionally, you will coach and mentor engineers, raising standards and sharing ownership of technical direction across the team.

What you'll do

• Lead a team building products that directly drive Flock's growth as an AI-first insurance company nearing 1 billion connected, insured miles.
• Own delivery and technical quality for the Acquisition team, working hand in hand with the PM to ship features that directly impact how fleets find and choose Flock.
• Write high-quality, well-tested TypeScript and own end-to-end delivery to production while maintaining strict quality standards.
• Partner with product to drive impact by collaborating with the Engineering Leadership Team and stakeholders to translate business goals into clear technical scope, success metrics, and delivery plans.
• Grow engineers around you by leading by example through code, design discussions, and pairing to raise team standards.
• Coach and mentor engineers across the Acquisition team to share ownership of technical direction and foster collective accountability.
• Drive improvements to developer experience, CI/CD, observability, and release practices that make the whole team faster and more confident in deploying solutions.
• Make pragmatic trade-offs that balance reliability, performance, and cost across AWS services to support fleet insurance operations.
• Decide how the team uses AI, from coding assistants to agent workflows in review and release, keeping engineering judgement central where it matters.
• Integrate with and contribute to the development of RESTful APIs exposed via API Gateway as part of the serverless architecture.
• Use your AWS experience with Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, EventBridge, DynamoDB, S3, and CloudWatch to support and extend the Acquisition team's services and pipelines.
• Work with infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform or CDK for provisioning and managing cloud resources in a scalable manner.
• Co-own the team's success with the PM, jointly leading projects from scoping and planning through to delivery and measuring impact on fleet insurance growth.
• Give engineers the space and ownership to lead projects themselves, asking the right questions to challenge their thinking and help them land on the right solution.
• Champion practical testing, type-safe APIs, and pragmatic patterns that shape long-term technical direction across the team.
• Set the example on AI-assisted development and coach engineers on where it genuinely speeds the team up and where human judgement needs to stay in the loop.
• Curate technical decisions based on real insights from production and user behavior to continuously improve the fleet insurance product experience.
• Act as a force-multiplier, raising standards through code reviews, pairing, and design discussions to ensure consistent quality.

Requirements

• Proven ability to co-lead a team alongside a PM, taking joint ownership of delivery, quality, and outcomes, not just your own output in the fleet insurance space.
• Strong hands-on engineering ability; comfortable shipping high-quality, well-tested TypeScript in production and holding the team to the same standard.
• Significant experience with AWS and modern serverless technologies including Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, EventBridge, DynamoDB, S3, and CloudWatch.
• A pragmatic approach to technical decisions, balancing trade-offs between reliability, performance, and cost for connected vehicle data platforms.
• Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or CDK for managing cloud resources in production environments.
• Comfort working in an API-driven environment with RESTful services exposed via API Gateway in a serverless architecture.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate closely with product managers and stakeholders to align technical delivery with business objectives.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills to articulate technical concepts and lead design discussions effectively.

• Curiosity about AI's potential to transform insurance and a track record of using AI tools to increase shipping speed while maintaining quality.
• Experience contributing to open source projects or technical blogs that demonstrate thought leadership in cloud or insurance technology.
• Familiarity with the challenges facing fleet operators and connected vehicle data ecosystems.

Practical notes

This is a full-time role based in London. The position requires travel within the UK for team collaboration and stakeholder meetings as needed. Candidates must be eligible to work in the UK without sponsorship.
