Sr. Engineering Manager, Platform

About the role

You will manage high-performing teams of 9+ engineers and own complete end-to-end delivery accountability for critical platform initiatives. You will manage managers while driving design, development, implementation, and documentation of engineering solutions aligned with Zero Trust principles. You will establish best engineering practices and operational excellence backed by product, engineering, and scrum metrics. You will engage with other Illumio engineering teams to share expertise and align on dependencies and deliverables. You will work closely with Architects, Product Management, and Business stakeholders to set priorities and deliver world-class, secure products. You will participate in hiring to build and enable high-performing agile teams.

• Engage with Product Management and Business stakeholders to prioritize initiatives and deliver secure, impactful products.
• Work closely with Architects and cross-functional teams to deliver solutions within established architectural guidelines.
• Collaborate with senior leadership to chart the future roadmap of platform products and strategic initiatives.
• Participate in hiring, interview, and onboarding to build high-performing agile teams within the platform organization.
• Mentor and coach team members to foster growth, ownership, and continuous improvement.
• Represent Illumio at organizational events such as hackathons and demo days to showcase platform achievements.
• Partner with business owners and technical teams across India and global locations to gather requirements and drive execution.
• Leverage cutting-edge technology stacks spanning operating systems, distributed applications, and immersive UI/visualization tools.
• Contribute to shaping the future of cybersecurity through innovation in ransomware and breach containment on a global scale.

Requirements

• 6+ years of experience in building products with a focus on cloud-based high-performance systems.
• 7+ years of experience in leading and managing high-performance teams.
• Have led a team of 9+ engineers or managers and owned accountability of end-to-end delivery.
• Excellent stakeholder and program management skills with a track record of managing complex initiatives.
• Extensive experience building distributed systems and cloud services using technologies such as Java, Spring Boot, Golang, and Python.
• Advocacy for engineering and operational excellence across the product lifecycle.
• Knowledge of cloud platforms including Azure, AWS, and GCP in production environments.
• Exposure to developing large-scale data platforms using cloud technologies and data warehouse products like BigQuery and Redshift.
• Proficient in understanding and handling non-functional requirements (NFRs) such as scalability, performance, and security.
• Strong experience running cloud-distributed systems in production for at least 2-3 years.
• Experience creating high-performing, highly scalable, and distributed middle-tier services in cloud environments like Azure, AWS, or GCP.
• Good knowledge and experience developing REST-based APIs and integrations with internal and external systems.
• Object-oriented analysis and design using common design patterns and best practices.
• Knowledge of unit testing frameworks such as JUnit, Spock, Jest, and code quality control platforms.
• Experience in CI/CD development environments and tools including Git, Maven, Gradle, Jenkins, and GCP DevOps practices.
• Working knowledge of SQL and NoSQL database technologies for managing structured and unstructured data at scale.
• Strong hands-on development skills to prototype technical solutions and validate platform concepts quickly.
• Strong desire to drive change and the ability to adapt to rapidly evolving priorities and technologies.
• Willingness to learn new and emerging technologies and apply them to platform challenges.
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including negotiation, facilitation, and consensus-building.
• Ability to influence and persuade stakeholders without direct control through leadership and expertise.
• Well versed with Agile methodology, particularly Scrum, and experience working in iterative delivery models.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage competing priorities effectively.
• Commitment to maintaining a strong security and compliance posture in all platform deliverables.
• Willingness to collaborate across time zones and support global teams across India and other regions.

Nice to have

• Prior experience in roles involving organizational change management or transformation initiatives.
• Demonstrated success in building and scaling platform engineering organizations in regulated or high-growth environments.
• Experience with automation frameworks for testing, deployment, and observability in cloud-native platforms.
• Familiarity with ransomware detection, threat intelligence, and breach containment use cases.
• Contributions to open-source projects or technical communities related to cloud security and platform engineering.
• Experience mentoring engineers through career growth programs, leadership training, or technical coaching.

Practical notes

This position requires 5 days on-site per week at the headquarters in Sunnyvale, California. The role is full-time and contingent upon eligibility to work in compliance with U.S. export controls.
