Hardware Test Intern [Fall 2026]
Job description
About the role
This internship supports the reliability of humanoid robots through hardware test development and execution. You will work with cross-functional engineering teams in a fast-paced robotics environment. The role focuses on building test stations and diagnosing hardware-software integration issues. You will own the setup, execution, and reporting of tests that validate mechanical and electrical systems under realistic conditions. Your work will directly inform design decisions and ensure that hardware changes do not degrade robot behavior. You will collaborate closely with engineers to translate requirements into repeatable test procedures. This position is ideal for someone who wants to see their work physically validate a robot's capabilities.
Key facts
What you'll do
Establish test objectives in collaboration with hardware and software engineers to align testing with system requirements.
Design and construct test fixtures and stations that exercise mechanical, electrical, and sensor subsystems of a humanoid robot.
Diagnose hardware and software integration issues by correlating sensor data with actuator responses during test runs.
Implement test procedures using scripting and automation to increase coverage and reduce manual repetition.
Perform measurements and collect performance data to track trends, anomalies, and deviations from expected behavior.
Support rapid prototyping iterations by validating that new hardware meets functional and safety criteria.
Execute tests in a methodical manner, documenting steps, conditions, and results to ensure traceability and repeatability.
Assist in defining first article inspection processes to verify that manufactured components meet design intent.
Work within Linux environments to configure test systems, manage logs, and analyze recorded datasets.
Contribute to a culture of quality by identifying root causes and communicating findings clearly to engineering partners.
Maintain organization of test assets, including configurations, scripts, and documentation, in version control systems.
Support qualification activities that confirm hardware reliability before deployment in field trials or customer demos.
Proactively flag inconsistencies in sensor readings or mechanical behavior that could indicate design or assembly issues.
Engage in continuous learning by observing how experienced engineers approach debugging and verification challenges.
Take ownership of test tasks from planning through execution, demonstrating reliability in meeting timelines and standards.
Requirements
Pursue a degree in Mechanical, Robotics, Mechatronics, Electrical or a related engineering field, with at least two years completed by the start of the internship.
Present a portfolio or website showcasing relevant projects and your role in them to demonstrate hands-on capability.
Demonstrate hands-on experience designing, building, and testing mechanical or electromechanical prototypes from concept to reality.
Use version control (Git) and program in languages such as Python, C++, C, or MATLAB to automate test workflows.
Apply excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with careful attention to detail during complex test executions.
Communicate effectively in writing and verbally to collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams.
Show a genuine passion for robotics and hardware development through practical work and continuous curiosity.
Follow documented test station qualification processes to ensure procedures are correct and compliant.
Have experience with sensors, motors, or electromechanical systems that interface with robotic hardware.
Use CAD software such as CATIA V6 for mechanical and electrical design when contributing to hardware tasks.
Apply familiarity with rapid prototyping methods including 3D printing and circuit design or breadboarding.
Understand manufacturing processes and first article inspection principles relevant to hardware validation.
Use Linux environments comfortably for test setup, data logging, and diagnostics troubleshooting.
Maintain a strong work ethic, showing reliability, ownership, and coachability in a fast-paced team setting.
Nice to have
Apply familiarity with rapid prototyping methods including 3D printing and circuit design.
Understand manufacturing processes and first article inspection.
Follow test station qualification processes.
Have experience with sensors, motors, or electromechanical systems.
Use Linux environments.
Practical notes
This internship is based in San Jose, CA, and runs for 8 to 12 months. The position is paid between $35 and $45 per hour, with total compensation details shared if an offer is extended.
Typical interview steps
Internship hiring usually involves a resume review, a behavioral conversation, and sometimes a skills exercise. Candidates are evaluated for potential, curiosity, and communication rather than deep experience. Show interest, ask questions, and prepare examples from projects or coursework. Interviewers at this level care most about motivation and coachability. Real examples from projects, classes, or clubs beat generic answers.
Good to know
Hardware testing roles build physical systems that validate robot performance in real conditions. Prototyping turns design concepts into functional hardware through iterative testing. Version control and scripting help track changes and automate test workflows. Sensors and actuators convert physical signals for measurement and control. Diagnostics require methodical analysis to isolate root causes in integrated systems.
Questions to ask
Worth asking in any interview: how the team measures success, who the role works with daily, what the onboarding looks like, and what the company is trying to achieve this year. Asking what past hires did well is a strong final question. Keep the list short and pick the questions that matter most to you.
Career growth
Internships are a bridge to early careers. A strong internship leads to a full-time offer and a head start on experience. Interns who take ownership, ask questions, and document their work get the most out of the program. Interns who treat the program like a real job, with follow through and visible ownership, convert to full-time offers at the highest rates.
