About the role
The is a pivotal position responsible for defining the technical future of the Figure consumer mobile application. This role owns the complete lifecycle of the Android application, from initial architectural vision through global deployment and long-term maintenance. The hire will be the first Android expert, establishing the foundational codebase and setting the standard for quality and performance on the platform. You will own the integration between the Android software and Figure's proprietary hardware systems, ensuring seamless data flow and user experience. This position requires a high degree of ownership, initiative, and collaboration with a distributed team of hardware and software specialists. The work involves solving complex problems in data ingestion, real-time processing, and user interaction on a physically intelligent robot.

What you'll do
Architect and design the end-to-end Android architecture for Figure consumer features, ensuring scalability and performance across the Google Play ecosystem.
Implement robust CameraX or Camera2 pipelines to handle high volume data ingestion, integrating offline first synchronization strategies for reliable operation in varied environments.
Lead the creation of core user flows, including onboarding, capture workflows, task management, earnings tracking, and notification systems, with strict performance discipline.
Establish and enforce coding standards, peer review practices, and instrumentation for analytics, experimentation, and crash-free release processes.
Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams in iOS, hardware integration, and backend engineering to deliver complete features end-to-end without friction.
Drive the strategy and execution of staged Google Play rollouts, enabling fast and high-quality release cycles for consumer users worldwide.
Mentor incoming engineers, providing guidance on code quality, architecture decisions, and efficient mobile development processes.
Champion the integration of Bluetooth Low Energy and other connected device technologies, aligning software workflows with Figure hardware specifications.
Optimize application performance, battery usage, and reliability across a wide spectrum of Android devices and OS versions.
Define the mobile platform roadmap, balancing user needs, business objectives, and technical constraints in a fast-paced environment.
Ensure the application adheres to security best practices and data privacy standards for handling sensitive user and hardware data.
Act as the primary technical authority for the Android application, making critical decisions that impact the product's success.
Requirements
You must possess more than six years of professional experience building and shipping consumer Android applications at scale in production environments.
You must demonstrate expert-level proficiency in Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, writing modern, efficient, and maintainable UI code.
You must have deep, hands-on experience with CameraX or Camera2 APIs, including complex media pipelines and offline-first data synchronization techniques.
You must have a proven track record of leading or serving as the senior most engineer on a mobile platform, guiding technical direction for a product.
You must bring strong product sense and the ability to navigate a fragmented device landscape, ensuring a consistent experience for all users.
You must be comfortable owning a platform end-to-end, from ideation through implementation, on a small, fast-moving, and agile team.
You must have a strong understanding of Android system internals, memory management, and performance optimization techniques.
You must be able to work effectively in a collaborative, cross-functional environment, communicating clearly with hardware engineers and backend developers.
Nice to have
Prior experience at top consumer app companies such as Snapchat, Instagram, or Uber is preferred.
You have proven Bluetooth or connected device integration in production products, shipping real features to users.
You have a cross-platform background through React Native, Flutter, or Kotlin Multiplatform, allowing for flexible development strategies.
Skills & Tools
Core expertise in Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, CameraX, and Camera2 is mandatory.
Experience with Bluetooth Low Energy, React Native, Flutter, and Kotlin Multiplatform is a significant advantage.
Familiarity with Google Play services, analytics, and crash reporting tools is expected.
Knowledge of version control systems, continuous integration, and automated testing frameworks is required.
Practical notes
This role requires five days per week of in-office collaboration at the Figure headquarters in San Jose, California. The position is a full-time employment opportunity with a start date to be determined. Travel is not currently required for this position. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States.
