About the role
Everlaw is seeking a Senior Software Engineer, AI Platform to own the design, implementation, and operation of the core AI infrastructure that powers critical user-facing features. You will be responsible for building and maintaining the platform capabilities that enable advanced legal workflows powered by modern AI techniques. This role requires deep involvement in full-stack challenges including retrieval, vector search, model orchestration, evaluation, and agentic patterns. You will work autonomously across the stack while collaborating closely with product and platform partners to deliver impactful AI platform features. The position emphasizes ownership of serious capabilities, clean code, and continuous learning within a high-growth environment.

What you'll do
Design and build AI platform capabilities that power essential product experiences such as Deep Dive, predictive coding, multi-modal understanding, agentic workflows, translations, search, review, and more.
Contribute to RAG pipelines, semantic retrieval, and agentic orchestration patterns including indexing pipelines, query flows, tool-calling and planning logic, relevance tuning, benchmarking, and multi-modal workloads where applicable.
Collaborate with Product, Platform, Security, and DevOps partners to build and ship new features within production environments while maintaining high standards for quality and reliability.
Help scale our system to handle larger datasets across hundreds of millions of documents while ensuring performance and stability.
Provide technical mentorship to other engineers by sharing expertise and becoming a specialist in specific areas of the codebase.
Act as a code reviewer by evaluating code developed by others using strong knowledge of programming languages, design patterns, and best practices.
Fix defects in our product by triaging issues, debugging problems, and implementing solutions to track and resolve system errors.
Provide on-call support for the product by responding to customer questions, triaging defects and exceptions, and carrying out remediation activities as needed.
Participate in the development and maintenance of sophisticated technology built by a small, talented team as the company grows.
Engage in the creative process of building systems that are reliable, reproducible, explainable, scalable, and secure through careful design and implementation.
Take ownership of significant platform capabilities while working with substantial autonomy across the full stack.
Leverage deeper experience in areas like RAG pipelines, LLM integrations, or large-scale retrieval pipelines to drive platform initiatives.
Support the company mission to promote justice by illuminating truth through technically robust and user-focused platform development.
Contribute to a culture of learning and growth by applying new ideas and continuously expanding technical expertise in AI platforms.
Requirements
Must be a current United States citizen, national, or permanent resident authorized to work in the United States who does not require current or future work authorization sponsorship by Everlaw.
Must be eligible to work in Oakland, California, United States without requiring sponsorship now or in the future for work authorization.
Must be able to commute to or travel to Oakland, California, United States for work occasionally.
Must be able to start within 30 days of receiving an offer.
Must have at least 8 years of professional software engineering experience.
Must have proven experience building and operating AI platform capabilities in production environments.
Must have hands-on experience with full-stack development across frontend and backend components.
Must have deep experience with programming languages such as Python and JavaScript and related ecosystems.
Must have demonstrated ability to write clean, maintainable, and scalable software following industry best practices.
Nice to have
Preferred experience with RAG pipelines, LLM integrations, and large-scale retrieval pipelines.
Familiarity with agentic patterns, model orchestration, evaluation frameworks, and vector search technologies.
Experience contributing to open source projects or publishing technical work in relevant domains.
Practical notes
This is a full-time, on-site position located in Oakland, California with an expected hybrid schedule of 3 days/week in the office and 2 days/week at home.
Start dates are dependent on business needs and should be discussed with the hiring manager during the interview process.
Travel is not required for this role beyond occasional travel within the Oakland area for team collaboration or company events.
