Staff AI Engineer

About the role

Everlaw is seeking a Staff AI Engineer to own the design and execution of the company's comprehensive technical strategy for embedding artificial intelligence directly into its legal discovery and litigation products. This role owns the vision and implementation of AI as a core product differentiator rather than a peripheral feature, driving a step-function improvement in how truth is illuminated within the legal system. You will solve the most challenging problems involved in applying AI to complex litigation reasoning at unprecedented scale, handling millions to hundreds of millions of documents and multimodal inputs with robustness. You will act as a technical leader for a core AI engineering squad while simultaneously elevating the AI capabilities of the entire engineering organization through mentorship and guidance. Success in this role means shaping how Everlaw leverages cutting-edge research to deliver tangible value to customers navigating the legal landscape. You will have regular visibility and direct interaction with the company's Chief Technology Officer and other senior leadership, ensuring tight alignment between technical execution and strategic goals. This position requires a proactive thinker who thrives on ownership, deep technical collaboration, and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in legal AI.

What you'll do

Lead the conception and delivery of Everlaw's overarching technical AI strategy, maintaining a focus on frontier model capabilities and trillion-token scale applications.

Participate in early access programs with major AI labs such as Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic to provide direct feedback on unreleased models and API design.

Evaluate and integrate advancements in open-source AI offerings to determine their applicability to Everlaw's litigation and discovery challenges.

Guide and mentor engineers across the organization to level up their AI expertise through design feedback, code reviews, and technical documentation.

Collaborate closely with software engineers, security engineers, data scientists, product managers, and designers to advance the company's goal of becoming the AI leader in legal technology.

Champion the adoption of industry and research progression in ML and AI to identify new opportunities where these innovations translate into legal tech advantages.

Influence engineering and product direction to rapidly prototype and bring to market innovative features enabled by the latest developments in AI research.

Maintain a constant learning mindset regarding emerging AI developments, ensuring that Everlaw's technical strategy remains cutting-edge and defensible.

Act as a primary point of contact for cross-functional teams requiring deep AI expertise and strategic technical guidance.

Drive the implementation of AI solutions that handle complex litigation reasoning tasks at the massive scale required by Everlaw's customer base.

Promote a culture of experimentation and rigorous evaluation to ensure AI initiatives deliver measurable value to the company and its users.

Seek out and evaluate new tools, frameworks, and research papers that could provide a competitive edge in the legal discovery market.

Requirements

You have at least 6 years of experience working in ML/AI, and 8+ years overall in software engineering.

You have led significant AI projects, including applied use of LLMs in production settings and experience with NLP/text analysis.

You have programming skills in at least one scripting language, such as Python.

You are a constant learner, staying abreast of the latest AI developments from the industry and how they might apply to your work.

You're able to collaborate effectively with senior leadership, cross-functional partners, and external vendors.

You have a proven track record of delivering complex software projects in a professional environment.

You communicate clearly and persuasively, both in writing and verbally, to technical and non-technical audiences.

You are comfortable making decisions in situations with incomplete information and navigating ambiguity in a fast-paced setting.

This is a full-time, exempt position located onsite (3 days/week in office) in Oakland, California.
