About the role

This role is for a Senior Software Engineer, Backend focused on owning the systems that power Dave's core banking and payments experience. You will design, build, and maintain critical backend services using TypeScript and Node.js to ensure reliability, security, and scalability for millions of members. The position involves shaping technical architecture while balancing immediate business needs with long-term maintainability and performance. You will own distributed systems that support bank accounts, card management, payment processing, and integrations with sponsors and financial partners. What you'll do

• Design, build, and maintain scalable, secure, and resilient backend services using TypeScript and Node.js.
• Own and evolve distributed systems that support banking, card management, payment processing, and partner integrations.
• Architect technical solutions that balance immediate business needs with long-term scalability, maintainability, and security.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers to translate business goals into thoughtful technical solutions.
• Improve platform reliability by proactively identifying risks, optimizing performance, and strengthening observability through logging and monitoring.
• Design efficient data models and storage solutions across SQL and NoSQL databases.
• Participate in code reviews that improve code quality while mentoring teammates through constructive feedback.
• Continuously improve engineering practices by refactoring systems, reducing technical debt, and sharing knowledge across the team.
• Integrate with external systems to enable seamless movement of money and secure financial transactions for members.
• Implement features that support Dave's flagship ExtraCash product and upcoming Buy Now Pay Later offering launching in 2026.
• Ensure backend services meet stringent security and compliance standards required for financial services.
• Support the reliability and performance of debit card processing, payment routing, and authorization flows.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues with minimal disruption to the member experience.
• Contribute to technical documentation and best practices to enable efficient operation and onboarding of new engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• 4+ years of software engineering experience with a focus on backend development.
• Professional experience building backend applications with TypeScript and Node.js.
• Strong understanding of software engineering fundamentals, design patterns, and algorithms.
• Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs.
• Experience building scalable distributed systems and cloud-native applications.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate complex technical challenges and deliver practical, maintainable solutions.
• Excellent communication skills with a track record of collaborating effectively across engineering and cross-functional teams.
• Ability to thrive in an agile environment while balancing independent ownership with collaborative execution.
• Comfort working in a fast-paced environment where priorities can shift based on member needs and regulatory requirements.
• Willingness to participate in on-call rotations to support critical production services.
• Commitment to writing clean, testable, and maintainable code that adheres to industry best practices.
• Understanding of secure software development practices and common vulnerabilities in networked applications.
