About the role
Bamboohr is seeking a dedicated and experienced Mate to join our team in Long Beach, California. This full-time position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about maritime operations and have a strong commitment to safety and efficiency. As a Mate, you will play a vital role in supporting the Captain and ensuring the smooth operation of our vessels, contributing to our mission of delivering exceptional maritime services.

What you'll do
- Assist the Captain in navigating and operating the vessel safely and efficiently, ensuring compliance with all maritime regulations and company policies.
- Oversee deck operations, including cargo handling, mooring, and anchoring procedures, while maintaining high safety standards.
- Supervise deck crew members, providing guidance and training to ensure all tasks are performed to the highest standards.
- Conduct regular inspections of the vessel's equipment and systems, identifying and addressing any maintenance needs or safety concerns.
- Maintain accurate logs of navigational activities, weather conditions, and operational procedures, ensuring all records are up to date and compliant with regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate with shore-side personnel and other vessels to facilitate smooth operations, including loading and unloading of cargo.
- Participate in safety drills and emergency response training, ensuring readiness for any potential incidents at sea.
- Assist in the implementation of environmental protection measures, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and company policies.
- Communicate effectively with the Captain and crew, fostering a collaborative and efficient working environment.
- Monitor the performance of the vessel and crew, providing feedback and recommendations for improvement.
- Ensure that all safety equipment is properly maintained and readily available for use in emergencies.
- Support the Captain in administrative tasks as needed, including crew scheduling and inventory management.
Requirements
- Valid U.S. Coast Guard Mate's license (or equivalent) with appropriate endorsements for the type of vessel operated.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a maritime role, with a strong background in deck operations.
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage and motivate a diverse team effectively.
- Strong knowledge of maritime regulations, safety protocols, and navigational practices.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to interact professionally with crew and shore-side personnel.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and make quick decisions under pressure.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail, ensuring all operations are conducted safely and efficiently.
- Current STCW certification and other relevant safety training certifications.
- Familiarity with modern navigational equipment and software.
Nice to have
- Experience working with specialized vessels or in specific maritime sectors, such as offshore support or research.
- Additional certifications in safety management, environmental protection, or emergency response.
- Proficiency in multiple languages, enhancing communication with diverse crew members and stakeholders.
- Previous experience in a training or mentoring role, contributing to the development of junior crew members.
Skills & tools
- Proficient in using navigational tools and software, including GPS, radar, and electronic chart systems.
- Strong understanding of vessel maintenance and repair processes.
- Familiarity with safety management systems and environmental compliance protocols.
- Competence in using communication equipment, including VHF radios and satellite phones.
- Basic knowledge of first aid and emergency response procedures.
