About the role

Curtinmaritime is seeking a dedicated Port Engineer to join our team in Long Beach, California. This full-time position offers a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic maritime environment, where you will play a crucial role in ensuring the operational efficiency and safety of our fleet. As a Port Engineer, you will be responsible for overseeing the maintenance and repair of vessels, collaborating closely with various teams to uphold our high standards of service and performance.

What you'll do

Manage and coordinate all aspects of vessel maintenance, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and industry standards.
Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs to enhance the reliability and longevity of our fleet.
Collaborate with shipyard personnel and contractors to oversee repairs and modifications, ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget.
Conduct regular inspections of vessels to identify potential issues and recommend corrective actions.
Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
Work closely with the operations team to schedule maintenance activities with minimal disruption to vessel operations.
Provide technical support and guidance to crew members, ensuring they are equipped with the knowledge to perform their duties safely and effectively.
Assist in the procurement of spare parts and equipment, negotiating with suppliers to secure the best possible terms.
Participate in safety meetings and training sessions, promoting a culture of safety and continuous improvement within the organization.
Analyze performance data and prepare reports for senior management, highlighting trends and recommending improvements.
Stay current with industry advancements and best practices, integrating new technologies and methodologies into maintenance processes.
Foster strong relationships with regulatory agencies and industry stakeholders to ensure compliance and promote the company's interests.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
A minimum of 5 years of experience in marine engineering or a similar role, preferably within the maritime industry.
Strong understanding of marine systems, including propulsion, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
Proven experience in project management, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Excellent problem-solving skills, with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
Proficiency in using computer-aided design (CAD) software and other engineering tools.
Knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards related to vessel maintenance and operations.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities.

Nice to have

Experience with specific types of vessels, such as tugboats or barges.
Familiarity with environmental regulations and sustainability practices in the maritime industry.
Previous experience in a leadership or supervisory role.
Certification from a recognized maritime authority or professional organization.
Knowledge of safety management systems and risk assessment methodologies.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and engineering software.
Familiarity with maintenance management systems (MMS) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) software.
Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret technical data and make informed decisions.
Excellent organizational skills, with a keen attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating initiative and accountability.

The position is based in Long Beach, California, and may require occasional travel to other locations for vessel inspections and repairs.
Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States and may require a valid driver's license.
