What you'll do
- Operate and navigate tugboats in support of dredging operations, ensuring compliance with all safety regulations and protocols.
- Collaborate closely with dredge crews to coordinate the movement of dredging equipment and materials.
- Conduct regular inspections of tugboat equipment and systems to ensure optimal performance and safety standards.
- Maintain accurate logs of vessel operations, including fuel consumption, maintenance activities, and crew performance.
- Supervise and train deckhands and other crew members in safe operating procedures and emergency response protocols.
- Communicate effectively with port authorities, other vessels, and team members to ensure smooth operations and adherence to schedules.
- Respond promptly to any emergencies or incidents that may arise during operations, implementing appropriate safety measures.
- Participate in safety drills and training sessions to enhance crew preparedness and compliance with maritime regulations.
- Assist in the planning and execution of dredging projects, providing input on logistical considerations and vessel requirements.
- Ensure that all operations are conducted in an environmentally responsible manner, adhering to relevant environmental regulations.
- Maintain a strong understanding of navigational charts, weather conditions, and tidal influences to optimize route planning.
- Foster a positive team environment, promoting collaboration and open communication among crew members.
Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of experience operating tugboats, with a focus on dredging operations preferred.
- Valid U.S. Coast Guard Master's License (or equivalent) with appropriate endorsements for towing vessels.
- Strong knowledge of maritime safety regulations, navigational practices, and emergency response procedures.
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to effectively manage and mentor crew members.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to facilitate coordination with various stakeholders.
- Ability to work in a physically demanding environment and adapt to changing weather and sea conditions.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make quick decisions in high-pressure situations.
- Familiarity with vessel maintenance and repair procedures, with a proactive approach to equipment care.
- Commitment to environmental stewardship and adherence to sustainability practices in maritime operations.

- Experience with advanced tugboat technologies and navigation systems.
- Familiarity with dredging equipment and operations, including hydraulic and mechanical systems.
- Previous experience in a supervisory or training role within the maritime industry.

- Proficient in the use of navigational software and tools, including GPS and radar systems.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot and repair vessel equipment.

- Competence in using safety equipment and personal protective gear as required by maritime regulations.
