About the role
The incumbent operates under direct supervision of the Building Official or the Building Inspector Supervisor. The role centers on enforcing building safety and code compliance across a wide range of construction projects. The hire will conduct thorough inspections to verify that all work adheres to established legal and technical standards. They are responsible for identifying non-compliance and documenting findings accurately. This position requires a high level of technical understanding and the ability to interpret complex construction documentation. The role demands consistent judgment when assessing structural integrity and regulatory adherence. Successful performance ensures public safety and project legality within the jurisdiction.
What you'll do
Perform field inspections of industrial, commercial, and residential buildings during various stages of construction and remodeling to assure compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
Investigate and make reports on apparent violations of the applicable codes and regulations.
Provide code interpretation to the client, building professionals & the public.
Review of building plans and specifications.
Make recommendations for corrections and confer with contractors and builders to resolve violations of building and related codes.
Resolve problems and set priorities.
Read and interpret building plans, specifications and building codes.
Detect deviations from plans or specifications and standard construction practices.
Handle several tasks simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and attention to details in an environment of frequent interruptions.
Perform other related duties as required.
Conduct inspections in a manner that ensures public safety and regulatory compliance.
Document inspection results and maintain detailed records for official files.
Verify that all construction activities align with approved plans and local ordinances.
Assist in the resolution of complex code compliance issues through technical analysis.
Requirements
Must be a United States citizen or permanent resident alien.
Must possess a valid driver's license.
Must reside in or be willing to obtain a California driver's license.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a California Identification Card.
Must be able to pass a background investigation consistent with Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint requirements.
Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test consistent with the City of Sacramento Drug Free Workplace Policy.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must have knowledge of building construction, building codes, and related inspection procedures.
Must have the ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
Practical notes
The position may require employees to visit client locations, job sites, or other business-related locations in the course of their duties. In addition, employees may be assigned to clients whose business needs require driving as part of the employee's job responsibilities. Accordingly, employees assigned to positions requiring business-related driving must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
