The Associate Civil Engineer - Roadway Design at CSG Consultants plays a critical role in the delivery of public works projects within the California infrastructure sector. This position operates under direction and minimal supervision, performing professional engineering duties related to the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of roadway and related public infrastructure. The role requires technical analysis, design development, and coordination across multidisciplinary teams. The Associate Engineer contributes to project quality, compliance, and timely execution while supporting both internal and external stakeholders. This position is based in Foster City, California, and represents a full-time opportunity to engage in complex civil engineering work on public projects. The role specifically aligns with the firm's focus on public works, requiring adherence to established standards such as Caltrans and AASHTO while ensuring designs meet client and regulatory expectations.

What you'll do

Perform engineering calculations, and prepare plans, specifications and estimates for construction of public works projects. This core responsibility forms the foundation of the role, ensuring that technical designs are accurate, feasible, and aligned with project requirements. Under direction and minimal supervision, perform complex engineering work for public works projects, ensuring technical competence and compliance with governing regulations. This includes applying engineering principles to address design challenges and regulatory constraints.

Coordinate project activities with all stakeholders including but not limited to the project team, field personnel, agency staff, utility companies, other consultants, and contractors. Collaboration is essential to maintain alignment and resolve interdisciplinary issues efficiently. Maintain knowledge of the latest Caltrans and/or AASHTO design and construction standards and specifications to ensure designs remain current and compliant.

Work closely with clients and project teams to ensure alignment with project goals and regulatory requirements. This involves active communication and responsiveness to stakeholder needs throughout the project lifecycle. Perform other related duties as required to support project objectives, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in response to project demands. Assist in the supervision of a small group of assistant engineers and/or technical staff, providing guidance and technical leadership to ensure team productivity and accuracy.

Provide technical support for internal and external stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle, addressing inquiries and clarifying design intent as needed. Contribute to project deliverables, reviews, and documentation in a timely and accurate manner, ensuring that all outputs meet quality standards. Support the development and execution of project scopes, schedules, and budgets where applicable, integrating technical considerations into planning activities. Apply standard engineering principles to evaluate alternatives and solve practical design and construction challenges, optimizing project outcomes. Participate in quality assurance checks and peer reviews to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance of engineering outputs, reinforcing the firm's commitment to excellence.

Requirements

4+ years of progressive engineering experience in civil or roadway engineering roles, demonstrating a track record of independent contribution and technical responsibility. Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university is required, providing the foundational knowledge necessary for complex public works design. Current California Engineer-In-Training or Professional Engineer License is highly desired for licensure and independent responsibility, reinforcing the firm's capacity to deliver compliant and defensible engineering solutions.

Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license as required for job-related travel and site visits, ensuring mobility across project locations. Willingness and ability to travel to client locations, job sites, or other business-related locations as required by project needs, reflecting the field-intensive nature of public works engineering. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship, ensuring immediate availability for assignments and compliance with employment regulations. Must comply with client-specific requirements and standards when assigned to ensure contractual and regulatory adherence, minimizing risk and enhancing client satisfaction.
