About the role
At Beta Engineering, the Substation Engineer owns the complete lifecycle of substation design projects from initial concept through final documentation. This role requires ownership of complex electrical layouts and ensuring all designs strictly adhere to industry codes and standards. The engineer will serve as the primary technical authority for substation components and systems during the project lifecycle. You will be responsible for translating project requirements into detailed and accurate engineering drawings and calculations. The position demands rigorous attention to detail to eliminate errors and ensure safety compliance. You will act as a technical consultant, answering complex questions from construction teams and project management. Success in this role is defined by the delivery of high-quality designs that meet customer specifications on schedule.

What you'll do
Perform intricate substation layout designs and validate electrical arrangements for optimal performance.
Execute comprehensive grounding calculations to ensure personnel safety and system reliability.
Analyze conduit fill capacities to verify compliance with installation standards and project constraints.
Calculate pulling tension for all conductors to prevent damage during installation and commissioning.
Determine vehicle tracking loads on structural elements to confirm structural integrity and safety.
Design and verify outdoor lighting systems to maintain visibility and security at all facility times.
Develop detailed lightning protection systems to safeguard critical electrical infrastructure from strikes.
Conduct substation Sag-10 calculations to confirm safe conductor clearances under various conditions.
Engineer flexible jumper configurations to manage dynamic forces and thermal expansion effects.
Design main bus systems ensuring efficient power distribution and fault tolerance capabilities.
Execute precise arc-flash studies to define hazard zones and inform personal protective equipment requirements.
Perform insulation coordination studies to align equipment capabilities with system voltage characteristics.
Calculate underground ampacity ratings to ensure cable longevity and performance in buried environments.
Author and verify material lists describing major and minor substation equipment for procurement accuracy.
Demonstrate unwavering integrity and ethics in all client interactions and project documentation.
Requirements
Bachelor degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Civil Engineering.
Strong background in Microsoft Word, Mathcad, Excel, and PowerPoint required; strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
Knowledge of all or some of the following applications are preferred: AutoCAD, CDEGS grounding software, CYMCAP, LitePro, FEAP, Southwire SAG/Ten, Alcoa, Vehicle Tracking, SAP-2000.
Must adhere to and practice the Beta core competencies and Beta principle in every professional interaction.
Must maintain a clean driving record as use of company vehicles is a requirement of position.
Able to perform quality work within deadlines with or without direct supervision consistently.
Capable of interacting professionally with other employees and customers at all project stages.

Committed to communicating regularly with supervisor regarding designs, concerns, studies, or tests.

Able to travel occasionally to active job sites for construction visits and testing procedures.
Must be able to perform duties safely at outdoor construction sites while adhering to strict site safety requirements.

Practical notes
Occasional overnight travel to active job sites.
Must have clean driving record as use of company vehicles is a requirement of position.
Works in an office environment with minimal exposure to dust, noise, and other environmental hazards.
Overnight travel is required to an active construction site for a period of one or two weeks at a time.
Ability to perform duties safely and to adhere to each job site's safety requirements; while working on an active job site, outdoors, is a requirement.
