About the role
You will manage the full lifecycle of indirect tax compliance for Cohere's global operations, owning the calculation, filing, and remittance of VAT, GST, and sales tax across key jurisdictions. You will leverage automation and AI to streamline tax workflows, ensuring data integrity and process efficiency while reducing manual effort. You will own the strategic interpretation of complex tax regulations and translate them into actionable policies for product, finance, and legal teams. You will manage direct responses to tax audits and inquiries from authorities, acting as the primary point of contact for regulators. You will identify and mitigate indirect tax risks, ensuring all activities align with global regulations and internal governance standards. You will collaborate closely on digital services tax and electronic services implications, assessing how new offerings are taxed. You will partner with cross-functional stakeholders to evaluate the tax impact of new initiatives, contracts, and market entries, supporting responsible growth.

What you'll do
- Execute end-to-end management of indirect tax compliance, including registrations, filings, and remittances for global VAT/GST and US sales and use tax.
- Streamline tax workflows by implementing automation and AI tools, enhancing data governance and improving the accuracy and efficiency of tax processes.
- Develop and deploy indirect tax strategies that align with Cohere's business growth, product lines such as SaaS and AI services, and international expansion plans.
- Manage comprehensive responses to tax audits and inquiries from tax authorities, ensuring timely and accurate resolution.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate indirect tax risks, ensuring strict adherence to global tax regulations and internal policies.
- Analyze and advise on the implications of digital services taxes and electronic service models for the business.
- Partner with Finance, Legal, and Product teams to assess and communicate tax impacts related to new initiatives, contracts, and market entries.
- Lead process improvement initiatives to optimize tax operations, leveraging technology to reduce manual dependencies and drive scalability.
- Maintain current awareness of evolving indirect tax rules and regulations across all operating jurisdictions.
- Support the implementation of tax policies and controls to ensure consistency and compliance at scale.
- Collaborate with external advisors and tax authorities to resolve complex tax matters efficiently.
- Provide clear, structured reporting on indirect tax activities, risks, and outcomes to internal stakeholders.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of tax documentation, including workflows, procedures, and technical specifications.
- Champion the use of tax automation platforms to improve data quality, reduce errors, and enhance audit readiness.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field with a focus on Indirect Tax, or equivalent practical experience.
- Bring 3-5 years of indirect tax experience, with a proven track record in multinational environments.
- Demonstrate deep knowledge of U.S. and/or Canadian indirect tax laws, including sales tax, use tax, and VAT/GST regulations.
- Show familiarity with the principles of global indirect tax regimes and how they apply to digital and SaaS businesses.
- Have prior experience working within technology or SaaS organizations, understanding the unique tax challenges of these models.
- Exhibit experience with tax automation software such as Vertex or Avalara, or similar platforms.
- Possess strong analytical skills to interpret complex tax regulations, model scenarios, and communicate findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrate a history of successfully managing projects and processes in fast-paced, global, and matrixed settings.
- Maintain a meticulous attention to detail and a strong commitment to accuracy in all tax filings and calculations.
- Show the ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative, cross-functional team.
- Uphold the highest standards of integrity, confidentiality, and compliance in all tax-related activities.
- Be willing to travel occasionally for audits, meetings, or training as required by global tax initiatives.

- Experience with additional international tax regimes beyond the U.S. and Canada.
- Advanced knowledge of tax automation tools and AI applications within tax functions.
- Exposure to Sovereign AI initiatives and their associated tax considerations.
- Familiarity with corporate tax planning in technology companies.
