The City of Hamilton is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Tour Boat Captain/Guide. Key facts
What you'll do
- Safely operate the tour boat, ensuring compliance with all maritime regulations and safety protocols.
- Conduct engaging and informative guided tours, sharing insights about the local history, geography, and wildlife of the Hamilton waterfront.
- Interact with passengers in a friendly and professional manner, answering questions and addressing any concerns they may have during the tour.
- Prepare and maintain the boat for each tour, including pre-departure checks and post-tour clean-up.
- Collaborate with the City of Hamilton's tourism team to develop and enhance tour content, ensuring a high-quality experience for all guests.
- Monitor weather conditions and make informed decisions regarding tour schedules and safety.
- Assist in marketing efforts by promoting tours through social media and community events.
- Maintain accurate records of passenger counts, safety checks, and any incidents that occur during tours.
- Participate in ongoing training and development opportunities to enhance guiding skills and safety knowledge.
- Provide feedback to management regarding tour operations and passenger experiences to help improve future tours.
- Ensure that all equipment and supplies are stocked and ready for each tour, including life jackets and first aid kits.
- Foster a welcoming atmosphere on board, encouraging group interaction and participation in the tour experience.
Requirements
- Must possess a valid boating license and have experience operating boats in a recreational or commercial capacity.
- Previous experience in a customer service role, preferably in tourism or hospitality.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage and entertain diverse audiences.
- Knowledge of Hamilton's history, culture, and natural environment is highly desirable.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as tour schedules may vary.
- Must be physically fit and able to lift heavy equipment as needed.
- First Aid and CPR certification is preferred, or willingness to obtain certification prior to starting.
Nice to have
- Experience in public speaking or leading group activities.
- Familiarity with local flora and fauna, particularly those found in the Hamilton area.
- Previous experience in a role involving outdoor activities or recreation.
Skills & tools
- Proficient in using navigational tools and equipment, including GPS and marine radios.
- Strong organizational skills for managing tour logistics and passenger safety.
- Ability to use social media platforms for promotional purposes.
- Basic maintenance skills for minor boat repairs and upkeep.
