About the role
The Instrumentation & Controls Engineer at Terreva Renewables in Atlanta, Georgia owns the end-to-end performance of control systems for renewable natural gas operations. This role requires ownership of the complete lifecycle management from design through commissioning and continuous optimization. The hire will ensure that instrumentation logic delivers precise gas flow measurement, reliable data acquisition, and secure integration with supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. Decisions made in this position directly influence plant safety, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency across facility operations. The position reports to the Vice President of Systems Engineering and functions within the Operations Department as a technical owner for control strategies. In this capacity, the engineer will maintain measurement integrity and facilitate clear communication between equipment and operators. The role demands a proactive approach to translating operational requirements into robust control system configurations.

What you'll do
- Design and configure control strategies that translate raw gas measurements into actionable SCADA tags aligned with project specifications and operational requirements.
- Set up field devices such as sensors, transmitters, and analyzers to meet defined performance standards and environmental conditions.
- Develop and execute testing procedures to validate logic changes prior to implementation in live environments to ensure system stability.
- Maintain documentation of wiring diagrams, ladder logic, and alarm parameters to ensure future modifications remain clear and manageable.
- Coordinate with equipment vendors to confirm that hardware components satisfy environmental, safety, and operational requirements.
- Support commissioning activities to ensure new instrumentation integrates smoothly with existing landfill gas collection and processing systems.
- Utilize historical and real-time data during startup and troubleshooting to identify sensor or network faults accurately.
- Collaborate with operations teams to refine alarm setpoints and response procedures, ensuring actions are understandable and effective for all stakeholders.
- Interpret Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and convert them into functional control configurations that drive physical systems.
- Use Microsoft Office 365 for documentation and reporting to maintain clear records and communicate findings to internal and external partners.
- Employ email communication for internal coordination and external correspondence to ensure timely information exchange.
- Operate daily tasks involving SCADA systems, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and software tools associated with landfill gas monitoring.
- Adhere to company procedures, safety protocols, and environmental regulations to ensure all duties are performed in compliance with standards.
- Conduct analysis of control system performance to identify opportunities for optimization and reliability improvements.
- Support knowledge transfer activities to ensure operations staff can effectively manage and troubleshoot control systems.
Requirements
Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Instrumentation or a closely related engineering discipline as the foundational academic credential for this role. A minimum of three to five years of experience in control systems for industrial processes is required to ensure practical competence. Proficiency in PLC programming is essential, including regular use of ladder logic and function block diagrams to build reliable control strategies. The engineer must understand 4-20 mA signal principles and sensor calibration methods, and how these factors influence data accuracy in critical measurements. Experience with SCADA platforms, historian software, and standard reporting tools is necessary for effective system monitoring and analysis. The ability to interpret Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and convert them into functional control configurations is required for successful implementation. Clear communication skills are needed when interacting with technical colleagues and non-technical stakeholders during reviews and meetings to ensure alignment and understanding.
