Job description
About the role
Director, Assistant Controller

The company serves more than 140,000 businesses and millions of individuals, providing AI verification at key moments such as hiring, housing, transportation, childcare, and financial services. Customers include Uber, Pennymac, Airbnb, Doordash, and Anthropic. Checkr has been recognized on the Forbes Cloud 100 2025 List and is a Y Combinator 2024 Breakthrough Company.
This position serves as a key leadership role within the accounting function. The Director, Assistant Controller reports to the Controller and oversees a team of ten professionals. Responsibilities include corporate accounting, close processes, financial reporting, and technical accounting. The role requires close collaboration with Finance Planning & Analysis, Tax, Corporate Development, and Legal. The individual will be expected to operate at a standard consistent with a public company, improving team performance and implementing robust controls.
What You Will Do
You will establish the pace and structure for corporate close activities. This includes leading month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close while driving timeline reductions. You will establish controls and reconciliation standards that meet external scrutiny. Responsibilities include full ownership of the general ledger, treasury operations, and technical accounting under US GAAP.
You will serve as the primary US GAAP technical expert within the organization. This involves answering complex accounting policy questions and developing appropriate treatments. You will partner with corporate engineering to optimize and automate Oracle Fusion as part of the broader accounting technology strategy.
External audit leadership is another core responsibility. You will manage the relationship with the external auditor to ensure an efficient and timely annual audit. You will also support corporate development activities, including integrations related to mergers and acquisitions.
Compensation
This role offers a targeted compensation package aligned with location. In Denver, Colorado, the range is $195,000 to $229,000 USD. In San Francisco, California, the range is $230,000 to $270,000 USD.
Requirements
A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline is required, along with CPA certification, which is strongly preferred. Candidates should bring a minimum of 12 years of progressively responsible experience, with preference for those from Big 4 firms or similar industry roles.
Deep expertise in US GAAP and broader financial reporting requirements is essential. You must demonstrate the ability to improve closing procedures and develop lasting process frameworks rather than simply maintaining existing workflows. Prior experience in a SOX compliance setting is advantageous.
An A-player mindset is required. This includes a bias for action, the ability to perform in uncertain environments, and a commitment to raising standards. You will take ownership of outcomes and drive results at a high level.
