About the role
You will own the complete lifecycle of measurement strategy for critical fusion hardware, translating high-level engineering requirements into precise inspection plans that ensure parts are buildable and reliable. You will partner daily with Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Design Engineering, Quality, and R&D to align inspection methods with production flow and technical risk. This role demands clear communication across disciplines so that measurement data supports informed decisions on design adjustments, process control, and supplier qualification. You will define, validate, and deploy inspection methods and tools for highly engineered components that enable the SPARC project to progress toward commercial viability. You will build repeatable, scalable metrology processes that reduce ambiguity, improve throughput, and support continuous improvement across manufacturing teams. You will take end-to-end ownership, from initial strategy and tooling selection through documentation, execution, and clear presentation of results to both technical and executive audiences. You will continuously refine measurement workflows to keep pace with evolving hardware designs and production targets. What you'll do
Drive inspection strategy for high precision components by developing measurement plans that align with engineering specifications and manufacturing constraints.
Implement dimensional, geometric, and surface metrology using coordinate measuring machines, optical comparators, laser trackers, and precision gauging to verify part conformity.
Establish measurement systems analysis through repeatability, reproducibility, and bias studies that quantify capability and support statistical process control.
Collaborate with Manufacturing to integrate metrology into production workflows, ensuring that inspection methods are practical, efficient, and scalable on the shop floor.
Partner with Supply Chain to qualify measurement equipment and define incoming inspection protocols that protect against nonconforming material entering production.
Work with Design Engineering to translate CAD models and technical requirements into measurable features, datums, and tolerances suitable for in-process verification.
Support Quality by developing measurement procedures, control plans, and work instructions that meet regulatory, contractual, and internal standards.
Lead root cause analysis when measurements indicate deviation, using data to distinguish between process variation, tooling issues, or measurement system error.
Document methods, results, and conclusions in clear technical reports that enable stakeholders to make timely, evidence-based decisions.
Continuously improve metrology processes by evaluating new sensors, automation, and software tools that reduce cycle time and increase confidence in inspection outcomes.
Requirements
Demonstrate experience applying metrology principles and measurement systems analysis to complex mechanical parts in a manufacturing or engineering environment.
Show a track record of developing inspection plans, defining measurement strategies, and documenting methods that support production and quality objectives.
Possess strong analytical skills, using statistical tools to assess process capability, measurement uncertainty, and data trends that inform corrective and preventive actions.
Communicate effectively across functions, translating technical measurement concepts into clear guidance for Manufacturing, Quality, and Design teams.
Exhibit disciplined documentation practices, ensuring that procedures, results, and decisions are recorded in a way that supports audits, traceability, and continuous improvement.
Collaborate comfortably in a team-oriented environment where cross-functional alignment is essential to solving demanding technical challenges.

Nice to have

Knowledge of statistical process control, measurement uncertainty analysis, and gauge calibration standards relevant to high-accuracy inspection.
