Position Summary
This position serves as the Senior Field Mechanical Engineer for the Assembly Team, taking ownership of the most intricate stations within the SPARC assembly sequence. The individual in this role provides direct engineering oversight and on-site problem resolution to ensure uninterrupted progress. Success requires a comprehensive understanding of the assembly workflow and the ability to guide technical staff through complex procedures. The position involves proactive resource management, including the procurement or rapid development of necessary tools and fixtures. Close coordination with the Assembly Process team and the Metrology group is essential to maintain precision and implement adjustments. The role is based on-site at the CFS-2 facility in Devens, Massachusetts, focusing on the practical execution required for the SPARC Tokamak build.
Key Responsibilities
The Senior Field Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the end-to-end management of SPARC module assembly. This includes guiding work from initial intake through construction, review, and final readiness. The role acts as the central authority for assembly flow at each station. You will diagnose issues as they appear and provide immediate solutions to prevent workflow interruptions.
Specific duties include designing and implementing custom tools to facilitate the handling of large coil assemblies. You will guide technicians through difficult assembly challenges to preserve continuous production momentum. When problems occur, you will regroup parts and adjust procedures in partnership with the Assembly Process team. This ensures that the SPARC build schedule remains on track. You will work with the Metrology team to support the precise alignment of critical coil structures and other major components.
Additional responsibilities involve coordinating with suppliers and other partners to secure necessary components for construction activities. You will revise work instructions based on observations made in the field and evolving assembly needs. Before any tool or fixture is used, you must verify that it meets all safety and accuracy standards. Final confirmation that handoffs between teams meet the program's strict quality requirements is also part of the role.
Required Qualifications
Candidates must possess a deep understanding of mechanical assembly processes within complex operational environments. Experience with high voltage systems and power components is mandatory. The ability to read and interpret detailed engineering drawings and schematics is essential. Strong problem-solving capabilities are required to address unforeseen assembly issues. Comfort working within a construction hall setting during active build cycles is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with tokamak systems and the assembly of large magnets is highly valued. Familiarity with the specific challenges of fusion energy projects provides a distinct advantage.
Tools and Skills
Proficiency in CAD software, particularly SolidWorks, is required. Additional technical skills include Python, SQL, and data visualization tools such as Tableau. These tools support the analysis and communication required for the role.
Compensation and Location
The position offers a competitive annual compensation package ranging from $180,000 to $220,000. The role is a full-time engagement. All work is performed on-site at the designated facility in Devens, Massachusetts.
