About the role
You will serve as the primary engagement leader for complex state and local tax advisory projects, owning the strategic direction and execution of client deliverables. In this role, you will act as a trusted advisor to executive stakeholders, translating intricate tax regulations into actionable business strategies. You will oversee the full lifecycle of large-scale SALT engagements, ensuring alignment with client objectives and regulatory requirements. You will drive business development initiatives and contribute to the growth and diversification of the SALT Services practice. You will build and maintain long-term client partnerships based on trust, technical excellence, and measurable results. You will foster a collaborative environment by working closely with cross-functional teams to solve complex tax challenges. You will mentor junior team members and elevate the firm's technical capabilities and industry reputation.

What you'll do
Lead and manage end-to-end state and local tax engagements, including corporate income tax, indirect tax, sales and use tax, multistone tax planning, and tax controversy resolutions.
Develop and implement strategic multistate tax planning frameworks to optimize client positions and mitigate future tax risk.
Provide technical leadership and guidance on nexus determination, apportionment formulas, and unitary filing methodologies for multinational organizations.
Design and deploy indirect tax strategies covering sales tax, use tax, and value-added tax compliance across diverse jurisdictions.
Spearhead tax controversy and audit defense initiatives, managing examinations, reverse audits, and negotiations with state tax authorities.
Evaluate and integrate tax technology solutions and automation initiatives to enhance compliance efficiency and reduce manual errors.
Conduct in-depth technical research and prepare executive-level memoranda to support complex state tax positions and regulatory interpretations.
Oversee engagement planning, resource allocation, quality assurance, and project economics to ensure profitability and client satisfaction.
Collaborate with legal counsel, external auditors, and internal finance teams to align tax strategies with broader corporate objectives.
Recruit, mentor, and develop senior managers, managers, and consultants to strengthen the firm's technical and leadership pipeline.
Drive proposal leadership and thought development to identify new business opportunities and expand existing client relationships.
Establish and maintain trusted advisor relationships with executive stakeholders to understand evolving business challenges and objectives.
Identify and evaluate cross-selling opportunities within Cfgi's client base to drive revenue growth and client retention.
Champion the development of innovative methodologies and scalable delivery models to improve engagement quality and efficiency.
Requirements
Possess a minimum of 12 years of progressive experience in state and local tax, corporate tax, public accounting, or corporate tax consulting.
Hold a minimum of 2 years of experience at a Big 4 firm, including but not limited to Deloitte, EY, KPMG, or PwC.
Demonstrate proven experience leading executive-level engagements involving state income tax, indirect tax, multistate tax planning, restructuring, and tax controversy.
Show a strong history of advising executive leadership on strategic tax planning, restructuring initiatives, and complex tax controversy matters.
Exhibit deep knowledge of applying state and local tax regulations across complex, multistate organizational structures.
Have extensive experience in leading technical tax research and drafting executive-level technical memoranda.
Display a track record of managing multiple concurrent engagement teams and overseeing project staffing and economics.
Demonstrate the ability to collaborate effectively with legal counsel, finance organizations, external auditors, and tax departments.
Nice to have
Possess a CPA license, JD, MST, MBA, or other relevant professional credential.
Hold a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, Business, or a related field.
Have experience supporting multinational organizations, private equity portfolio companies, or complex multistate enterprises.
Experience with Avalara, Vertex, tax research platforms, tax compliance software, workflow automation technologies, or AI-enabled tax solutions.
Practical notes
This role requires significant client travel throughout the United States to meet with stakeholders and project sites. You must be able to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously while maintaining a high standard of quality and attention to detail. The successful candidate will thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment where adaptability and proactive problem-solving are essential.
