About the role
In this position, you will be responsible for developing algorithms, FPGA firmware, and data acquisition systems specifically for the CMS online luminosity measurement, beam monitoring, and Tracker calibration for the High Luminosity LHC. You will coordinate these developments, ensuring that back-end systems for luminosity and tracking detectors are integrated and commissioned effectively, enabling real-time data processing and accurate luminosity measurements.

What you'll do
- Design, implement, and maintain firmware and real-time algorithms for back-end electronics across various CMS board platforms, including systems for the Fast Beam Conditions Monitor (FBCM) and Inner and Outer Tracker online luminosity.
- Validate front-end detectors and back-end electronics through rigorous laboratory testing to guarantee optimal end-to-end system performance from detector to data output.
- Conduct functional tests on detectors during integration at the Tracker Integration Facility to ensure systems are fully operational before installation.
- Organize and lead comprehensive test campaigns, which include preparatory activities, on-site coordination of participants, and systematic validation of hardware, firmware, software, and detector responses.
- Lead investigations into detector efficiency, calibration quality, and operational stability using both measurements and simulations.
- Coordinate technical interfaces across detector, trigger, timing, and data acquisition domains to facilitate system integration.
- Mentor and supervise students and fellows, providing structured technical guidance and participating in recruitment efforts.
- Anticipate future technical and operational requirements, structuring workflows, preparing necessary infrastructure, and collaborating with partner institutes to ensure smooth operations.
Requirements
- A PhD or equivalent relevant experience in Physics or a closely related field is required.
- At least one reference letter must be provided as part of your application.
- Practical experience in detector laboratories, electronics prototyping, and test beam operations is essential.
- Strong background in FPGA firmware development (using VHDL or similar HDL) and real-time data processing, particularly in the context of particle physics detectors.
- Proven ability to integrate and troubleshoot complex systems that encompass firmware, software, and detector hardware, from the frontend to data output.
- Experience with data analysis, detector efficiency, calibration studies, and the statistical methods pertinent to performance evaluation.
- Experience in supervising or mentoring students or junior colleagues, including candidate selection and tailoring guidance to individual strengths.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with the simulation, design, and development of trigger and data acquisition chains, particularly involving FPGA-based electronics.
- Experience in the simulation, design, and development of detector components.
- Skills in testing and validating detector, accelerator, and beam line components.
- Ability to analyze and optimize detector performance through the interpretation of both simulation and experimental data.
- A solid understanding of electronics and strong organizational skills.
- Effective communication skills, particularly in multidisciplinary team settings, to maintain constructive relationships and coordinate technical interfaces with diverse contributors.
